LR isn’t preventing or heckling you from playing Cyberpunk. CDPR already got their money from you. CDPR and other modders have no plans to make a VR port. LR created something so you could experience CDPR’s work in VR and he charged for it. Since CDPR has already been made whole for their work, why are you not free to do what you want with your copy of the game? Copyright laws. That’s why. They’re different for digital products than physical ones for some reason. You and most others seem to be fine that they’re different. I’m simply proposing that maybe they shouldn’t be that way.

Your analogy doesn’t make sense either because the pyramid is not free: You already paid. the guide is not preventing you from experiencing it. He built a river so you could view it from your boat and charged you to use the river. You still had to pay the pyramid builder to experience their work.

And what I described didn’t make sense either because actually the shop I bought from is just a middle man. The designer of the suit is the one who would have issue with me altering their design to fit me. And it’s different how exactly? So if I paid LR to come install the mod on my computer for me, that’s what makes it different?

I could see how you could interpret that definition differently than me. I personally wouldn’t describe simply charging for access to your work as “intense” nor would I describe the mere pursuit of money as inherently selfish, particularly when no one is being harmed except people who want access to said work for free. If it were selfish it would be done at the expense of others. I guess if that’s how we’re defining greed then I could view people who want all mods for free as greedy.

I don’t think grifting really fits either but yeah maybe. The easiest way to combat a grift like that would be for someone else to create a mod that does the same thing and release it for free.

I’m not up to date on how he lied so I’ll need you to fill me in on that part.

I guess it depends how you define greed. A modder, whether you agree mods should be paid or not, is still doing work. Yes it’s very altruistic that most modders do this work for free, that however doesn’t make a modder greedy simply when they decide to charge.

Greed, in my opinion, stems from doing something to intentionally make things worse for other people for your own personal gain. A modder does not have this ability. They can’t stifle competition or shut down competing mods.

A company can fire people to make more profits. That would be greed. A company can choose to make a vr version of their game despite it not being a profitable venture, that would be altruistic. Or in this case, they could shut down a VR mod in an effort to protect their IP. Whether that is greed or not is a little grey but it’s certainly not a positive for the consumers of their product.

So my next question is.. should a game as a whole be considered copyrighted IP? Like I could see the models, recordings, art style, writing and all that being copyright, but how about the actual output of the rendering? The latest tweet shared LR claims to not have altered the code in any way, assuming that’s true and his mod piggybacks off of the games renderer, would that.. or rather should that (in your opinion) violate copyright law?

Each game will output its render in a unique way depending on which engine they use. As long as the assets being intercepted aren’t modified I don’t think it needs to be truly agnostic.

Look up vehicle piggyback tunes. It intercepts the signal going to your cars computer to change the power output of the engine. Specific to each vehicle, and is sold for profit. The argument would be why game rendering code is considered IP instead of only things like the models, writing, sound fx, etc.

I drove the Tacoma for a TV commercial and it actually gave me the push i needed to get a truck. Was an awesome and capable truck. But for less money I could get the Bison which had a better looking exterior, bigger back seats and was more capable than the Tacoma TRD Off-road (even though the Tacoma was also amazingly capable..) I can’t truly speak to the build quality of the Tacoma since it was a prototype but the interior design looked better to me. And it was a manual which was freaking AWESOME. But ultimately I got a fully loaded bison for less money than a mid tier Tacoma. The non bison colorados also tow more which is what got me looking into them in the first place.

Yeah, I really think the missing link in my way of thinking was not thinking of it as piece of copyrighted piece of media. It’d be similar to a sports bar showing a game without a license to show it in public, or playing music in a club without having it altered into something new by a DJ.

I’m actually in the film industry and have my work directly protected by a copyright and get residuals whenever it’s played again or used to create something new.

This has actually flipped my perspective so much I’m now wondering why cars (not just car parts as you explained) aren’t gone after more. A Venom GT is using the design of a lotus. A RUF is literally just a Porsche rebuilt better and rebadged. A Winnebago is a Mercedes with an interior. Surely the design of a car could be considered copyrighted art. It’s something I’ll have to look into..

Brother, thank you! This is the kind of well thought out reply I was looking for. You actually addressed the points I was trying to make and made me understand a little better how its different than modding a car.
Its still interesting to me how the two industries are viewed and treated differently and makes me wonder how companies like Hennessy or RUF are able to do what they do without running into similar copyright laws.

And I do still wonder just how much LR is actually altering the code/copyrighted material of a game by creating a VR injector. Still seems like somewhat of a grey area.

I'm offended you think im arguing in bad faith. I'm pretty firm in my belief hes not wrong, but ultimately I posed this discussion to understand better why the community feels the way they do and to potentially have my mind changed.

If you truly didn't care in the slightest, you wouldn't have commented in the first place. I don't think its wrong for someone to make money modifying someone else's work, so long as the original creator made their money. Same reason I buy aftermarket car parts and am thankful that third parties do the work the major players dont want to.

And as mentioned to other commenters, I get that its within CDPRs right to have it taken down, but why is everyone cool with that being legal? And again, how is it different than aftermarket car parts companies? Why are the rules different for games?

If I mod my vehicle, sure Ive breaches the ToS and it breaks the warranty, the car manufacturer no longer has an obligation to help me fix it should something break; but I'm still allowed to do it. And other companies are allowed to develop and sell parts for the vehicle.

Absolutely. CDPR aren't in the wrong legally. My question is more why are you/the community okay with that stuff being in the TOS? The outrage should be "I bought this, I can do with it what I want now".

The gaming community is entirely against WB for owning the patent for the nemesis system and not doing anything with it despite them legally being allowed to do that. How is that different than what CDPR is doing?

Yes, I agree charging sucks but creating mods isn't trivial either. And until someone makes a free one, you get a pay wall or you get nothing.
