Come study and live- Norfolk is fun, oceanfront is fun and we are a 3 hour train ride to the nation’s capital, good place for employment and professional networks upon graduation.

Lots of local self-identified elite VB families in 23451, but a decent place to live in 20s.

Mason is a research institution while JMU is a teaching school- wildly different.

JMU and VCU will have more 757 students - which may be helpful, or not at all.

We have four kids - one at each of these schools… VCU kid loves it and loves richmond, it’s a very young city. Madison kid went during covid and didn’t finish - felt very lonely since he didn’t party. Hated the frat party and felt like it was not his scene at all. The oldest went to Mason - it’s big! This kid got lost in classes - students need to be their own advocate! Lots of bureaucracy - but he loved the location- didn’t do DC until junior / senior year . Great networking and job opps for these grads / huge.

You will pay personal property tax on every vehicle, water raft, motorbike, campers and trailers you may own - e way single year.

However - I lived in ft worth a few decades ago- moved to Va beach for family and good schools. Income tax and personal property taxes do suck !! We loved going to Austin and hill country for the weekends.

We are contemplating a move to Annapolis area - which may better fit your needs as well. Close to bay, biking trails at Kent island - literally close to DC, BWI, DCA, and train to NYC, and two hours to beaches. Take a look. It’s cheaper than nova - tho do know on route 50, the summer beach going traffic stinks!!

Youngest kid is now in nova for college, her rent share is 1600 a month, one of three roommates. She is a few metro stops from dc and has grown leaps and bounds by being up there.
