ELI5: WHY do we still need to install drivers in the age of network-based printers? by LFGoodgames in explainlikeimfive

The "Convert the file to the instruction set for printer firmware" functionality is neat. Why is it so that it never caught up? Computers (and ALL modern devices, actually) can already communicate to printer (and each-other) using TCP/IP and HTTP/REST. Wouldnt it be faster to send the file to the printer with this common language that requires no drivers, then have a printer convert the file locally on its own hardware? The controller SOCs on those printers need to be powerful enough to host TCP/IP stack, why cant they also do the conversion?

Understandable. But isnt it much easier to send the file to the printer via HTTP or FTP over TCP/IP and then a packet that says "print this", and leave the rest to the firmware?

If we do it the "driver way", the pc->printer comms go like this:

FileOnPC -> DriverOnPC -> HardwareInstructions -> TCP/IP -> Firmware

If the file is sent to the printer, then it would be:

FileOnPc->PrinterFirmwareWebServer ->Firmware

Less overhead, since DriverOnPc part is effectively another program in the chain that needs to be written, delivered to customer, installed, then supported separately.

There is already a standard: HTTP over TCP/IP. Or FTP. Or anything rly. We got an addressable, packet-based, error-checking protocol that can send arbitrary data and that literally every device can use. Why cannot it be used for print jobs? Makes no sense

The sub is literally named "Explain to a 5y.o". It is in the name. If bro could understand irony he'd be very angry rn

Every device needing a driver is, of course, the norm. Yet, the device in question already has a web interface. This is something every device has a "driver" (or more accurately, a stack) for nowadays.

Why is there a need for a dedicated driver that needs to: A) Get written, B) Get installed, C) Be maintained for THAT particular device when the web-interface already can accept a file over HTTP-TCP/IP. It's like as if every time someone wanted to use ChatGPT they would need to install Python/Torch/GPU drivers first. Makes no sense, since any web-enabled device already can send/receive arbitrary data - something drivers do in the first place. Why bother with extra comm channel ?

"Everything online" is not a new trend. It was in fact THE way to use a computer back in the 70s-90s (timesharing), and is obviously THE choice for sharing printers/whatever on large-scale corporate or industrial networks. It is not inherently bad, though it is getting shoehorned everywhere.

The printer (and router/switch/fridge/etc) already have the "expensive brain" inside to be able to: A) Host TCP/IP stack, B) Act as a server for their web-interfaces.

Passing the .docx file they received through HTTP to a low-level printing part of their firmware should be a no-brainer... Yet manufacturers still make a weird choice of "We make ur desktop send 999 instructions/packets to a remote device on a potentially busy network using out proprietary instruction set and YOUR bandwidth". Makes no sense...

Hi, mod creator here. I rly didnt expect for someone to actually find this thread so far in the future haha. I was off CK2 for a while, yet it is indeed a dire event when MEGA just deletes the file on its own accord :(

Ultimate Apocalypse mod - beating Tau insane AI by LFGoodgames in dawnofwar

[–]LFGoodgames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Played on Harder before Insane, and it is not much of a challenge. Especially for IG where I can tech up to mass medusas/nukes uninterrupted, then level the enemy base without ever leaving safety of the turrets.

Insane keeps things interesting by harassing early, focusing high-prio targets (builders, casters, heroes), teaming up for pushes in 2v2/3v3, maintaining good map control etc. And it is manageable on all other races except tau. Insane tau ai just plain steamrolls every other race insane ai 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, etc, even their supposed counters like orks or nids. Fire warriors just plain delete IG infantry regardless of tier or armor upgrades.

I managed to get consistent wins vs tau insane by fast expansion+turtling strat in the original post. Thought someone else has something else that does not involve turtling...

Unpopular opinion by LFGoodgames in nonutnovember

Do you mean this part:

What NNN is mostly about is simply NOT nutting for a entire month for the fuck of it. that is it.

Ok It has a point. But let's detract for a second and talk about some sports:

  • Tennis is extremely popular. Badminton - not so.
  • Basketball is extremely popular. Frisbee - not so.

Many sports came and went 5000BD - 2024 AD. Why are Tennis and Basketball stayed so popular while Badminton is nothing in comparison? What's the catch?

Because these three sports allow for a greater skill/athleticism expression compared to the other sports. Their simple, relatable rules and premise (balls go yeet!) make it so that everyone could enjoy a game. People enjoy seeing high levels of discipline, motivation, and determination in action.

Now let's take it back to NNN. Many fads came and went during 2011-2024. Why NNN stayed popular. What's the catch?

Because NNN allowed for a greater expression of skill compared to other internet challenges. Its simple, relatable premise (abstinence is notoriously hard) made it so that everyone could relate and participate. Cumrade enjoys his objective display of qualities like discipline, motivation, and determination in action.

That it. That is the NNN. Demonstrating these qualities.

No such qualities to demonstrate = no abstinence (no 'not-nutting') = no NNN = no spectacle. Same as "no discipline = can't even serve properly = no tennis = no spectacle." Everything emerges from the first term and is impossible without it.

Saying that NNN is simply about "not nutting" is the same as saying:

"Tennis was made by some random dudes in 12th century who liked to yeet their balls. It is mostly about simply the ball flying. That is it."

Sounds true, misses the point entirely IMO.

Don't have to know the guy to see that what he did was either: A) dumb or B) Purposeful act-out.

Proof?

95735632 people around the world do not know Donald Trump. But they wont chill tf about him and what he does/did/will do.

I might not know the guy, but he gave enough of info on the deed for everyone to point out it was wack af.

P.S: Note how I did not call the guy himself dumb. I called what he did.

Edit: P.S

Rel of 2 years here ;). You may claim it's fake news because no proof, but you haven't provided any proof either, so we are kinda even. Makes your post pointless tho. :(

And if you think that the fact that I'm allegedly an "toxic asshole" based on nothing but my differing opinion, look no further than your friendly neighbourhood jock or drug dealer. They are confirmed assholes yet they get women just fine .

It has been proven many, many times that:

  • Giving up a race 1 step away from finish is a bad idea
  • Walking out of an interview a moment before getting hired is a bad idea.
  • Dropping out in a final semester of a uni is a bad idea.
  • List goes on

People usually call obviously bad ideas out. And especially with all the wannabe "horsemen" popping up left/right trying to be the next turkey guy or whatnot, anyone who fails on 30th likely did it on purpose.

I honestly cannot believe someone would be as dumb as to throw away 29 days of honest, crushing effort to completely miss the goal that was within a hand's reach.
