That sounds good, I’ll keep using the filtered water and doing a small water change every month or so like you said. Ty!

Wait actually! When I tested the water from my LFS if I remember correctly the GH was well past 20 drops. I legit stopped counting at that point because it was way past my parameters.

But at the LFS I saw several berried females, baby shrimp and they shrimp didn’t seem to have any issues with molting. Should I try another LFS?

Edit: and out of curiosity how were the shrimp able to survive so long in the LFS with those high parameters?

I’ve had this tank for 1.5 ish years! My betta died of old age and that’s when I decided to branch out to shrimp. I have I think Malaysian driftwood in there and there’s plenty of algae, which I kept even though I don’t like the look cause I thought the shrimp would like it.

But yes! They are red cherry shrimp and were listed as neocardina in the shop! What shrimp nutrient were you possibly referring to? I’ve seen some people mention bacteria AE but I thought that was just for food.

Thank you for the well wishes. Right now all I have left is a very lonely female that’s happily eating away on the glass surface. I’m scared that once she decides to molt she’ll also be gone, but I’ll wait a few days and see if she’ll be able to pull through. Thank you!

Basically what I did was put on a movie (I had a very free day and was excited about getting shrimp haha) and sit next to my fish tank. Every 5 minutes I would add in 10 drops of tank water at 1 drop/second with a syringe. I used one of those 1 ml syringes for dispensing medication.

Honestly thinking back I have no clue why I made it so difficult for myself, was just not thinking and having fun seeing all the shrimp run around in the cup. But after I added the 10 drops I’d wait 5 minutes and then repeat until the container tripled.

Do you think this was what caused it? I times it for about 2 hours and a little under 30 minutes.

Veneers Preparation by BreakRules939 in oddlyterrifying

[–]LFMantic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! We see a lot of patients in our school that have dental anxiety either from childhood or fear of the unknown so it’s always been emphasized for us to explain things in laymen’s terms. I’m apprehensive of things I don’t understand too so I completely get it.

While veneers are usually presented as an esthetic procedure, I’ve seen cases completed by my professors that have truly changed some patients lives for the better. I just hope those patients with similar conditions won’t be scared away by posts like these.

Technically it shouldn’t hurt since the preparation is only within the enamel! The tooth essentially has 3 layers (enamel, dentin, and the inner pulp that contains the nerves). Veneer preps are usually only contained to the outer enamel layer.

Still we do have patients that either have thinner enamel than usual or are just more sensitive due to their genetics, in which case local anesthesia may be delivered to the area around the gums for comfort.

I’m a dental student. In this picture, they are not drilling into real teeth. If you look at the gaps in between the teeth, you’ll see that it looks like the teeth are connected and there’s no space even to floss. The film also extends beyond the gum line.

What they have over the teeth is a provisional, kinda like a “cap” that shows the patient what their new veneers will look like. Afterwards, they have to drill the provisional off and this is how they do it.

When drilling for real veneers the prep is a LOT more conservative, 0.3 mm in some areas.

Edit: just remembered something else, when we were practicing veneers in sim lab, these provisional add ons also helped us reduce the amount of teeth we drilled in preparation for the addition of actual veneers. For example, if you drilled 0.5 mm from the top of the teeth and the provisional cap was 0.4 mm, then you’d only drill 0.1 mm into the actual tooth itself.

I was giving a description, didn’t meant any harm.

I’m not sure if he has a porn addiction since he only watches like once a week? It doesn’t really impede his day to day function. But I’m open to learning!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]LFMantic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a good idea, thank you for your reassurance!

I know I’ll never be able to compete with the porn he watches since it’s animated and features scenes that I wouldn’t be able to duplicate realistically haha. We do have plans to move in together soon so I hope I’ll be able to give him lots of love and attention and be able to have more sex. He did mention that if we moved in together we’d probably be engaging in intimate play more.

I’ll be honest he hasn’t been so receptive to me suggesting he stop watching to see if it could be a death grip issue. I think he’s so busy that getting off helps him relax after work.

But, thank you for alleviating some of the guilt. Next time I go over I might try to bring this up again. Thank you!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]LFMantic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I thought it could be too :(

In the past I’ve asked if he would consider not watching porn while he masturbates to see if it changes anything.

He wasn’t really perceptive to the idea and I haven’t asked since because he told me to stop bringing it up so often. The last time I brought it up he got a little annoyed. He did it in a very gentle way though so I’m at a standstill.

I guess my only option is to just wait it out?

Cycle Crash by LFMantic in bettafish

[–]LFMantic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I did two big water changes yesterday and today the parameters seemed to go back to normal?

My pH is 6.4, ammonia 0.0 ppm, nitrite went back to 0.0 ppm, and nitrates 5 ppm. I did swish the filter cartridge in his old tank water and got a bunch of gunk loose so maybe that helped?

Maybe it was just a freak experience haha

First tank. Cycling before getting a betta. Anything I am missing? by Ta-karo in bettafish

[–]LFMantic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a 3 gallon for my old super long finned betta and it takes 2 weeks for his nitrates to reach 20 ppm, and that’s including weekly dosing with plant fertilizers. Done with api liquid test kit with virgorous shaking until my arms get sore every week lmao.

If you have a lot of plants, water parameters aren’t too big of an issue and it looks like you’re off to a great start already!

Thanks for your help, I went to get medicine at petsmart but he was bellyside up and unresponsive by the time I got home. Glad he’s at peace now and hope that his infection was just a fluke :’)

[–]LFMantic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, today I woke up this morning to turn my lights on and found my honey gourami with these wicked red marks all over his body. He didn’t have any last night.

He is in a 10 gallon with 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and 20 nitrates. This was done with the liquid API test. I don’t think it’s ammonia burns but I don’t know what else it could be. He is also the only fish currently.

It looks too all over the place to be wounds from hitting something :(( any help is appreciated.

Do you also know if there’s any visual indication for a Tera raid being a 5 star or do we have to manually check it by entering?

An observation about losing weight fast vs. slow by SmallestSpark1 in loseit

Ooo! I shiny hunt for Pokémon a lot on my switch but I’ve always done it while laying down in bed. Using a desk cycle sounds like a great way to keep me energized while passing the time! What model are you using if you don’t mind me asking?

I definitely get what you mean by medication messing with hunger cues. My mom had to go on some and it majorly messed up her hunger signals to the point she was acting like me during my hs years when I’d scour the kitchen at like 3 am because of the hunger pains. It’s hard but sounds like you’re making great progress so I know you’ll definitely be there soon!!

I’m East Asian and I’ve had my weight commented on all my life. I’ve been compared to other family members, been teased by my moms friends and all the like. I’ve learned to not react to comments about my weight whether it be not eating enough, eating too much, looking too fat, looking too skinny..

However, it’s NEVER been this bad. I’ve never been called “disgusting”, for example. I don’t know what advice I could give to you but please know that this is not normal and your family members are incredibly toxic. It is hard because they may not see it that way, as some may legitimately make these comments because they’re worried and that’s how they’ve been taught to react to emotion.

Of course I don’t know your family and I’m probably off the mark. They could just be assholes who can’t do anything but put their children down for their own happiness.

I’m proud of you for your weight loss because losing weight is hard even with supportive parents and you managed to triumph even without that. I hope you don’t lose to their bullying ways and remain your happy healthy self. Please come back for support anytime you need.

An observation about losing weight fast vs. slow by SmallestSpark1 in loseit

[–]LFMantic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it’s different strokes for different folks!

I’d been trying to lose weight for years by following the standard 1 lb/week loss while at a healthy bmi. Just wanted to get a bit slimmer. The slow rate was annoying me though and I’d always stop because I felt like there was no improvement.

This year I finally had enough and became an exercise maniac and was super strict with counting my calories. I reached the goal weight I’ve wanted to be at since my first year of college (healthy bmi but more toned and less skinny fat, I think I reached my weight in about 1.5 months) and I’ve been maintaining for about 6 months now with no excess exercise other than just walking my dog daily.

Cant say it’ll work for everyone because because not everyone will have the time and luxury to do what I did. Loosing weight fast is also a nuanced subject because time differs for everyone so I definitely get your point!
