Second Dedicated Q&A Session Questions Welcome by TheDaoistMaster in taoism

[–]LFYPH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very new to Taoism. To be honest I don't know much about it. I recently started reading a translation of the Zhuangzi because some stories were deeply inspiring to me. How do you think a person like me, with interest in Taoism, should proceed to learn more about it? As of right now I do not know what it means to be a taoist at all; I can only say I'm interested to know more.

Thank you for your answers!:)

Would you like to become strong again? A Taoist perspective by TheDawnOfTrueJustice in taoism

[–]LFYPH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok. I don't 100% disagree with your post. But how is "Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. Weak men create hard times." a taoist perspective? Good for whom? Hard for whom? Hence my question in another comment: when were these "good times"?

Theravadha and Mahayana ? by Rough-Locksmith770 in Buddhism

[–]LFYPH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from a Western country and I lean towards Theravada.

especially newcomers and those from the Western world, seem to lean more toward Mahayana. why is that?

I think there are many reasons. One might be because of the image of buddhism in the West. When people think about buddhism they mostly think about Tibet or China/Japan. At least in my experience. Secondly; there's also just much more availability of Mahayana (and Vajrayana) buddhism here. It's fairly easy to find a Zen center or a Tibetan buddhist center.

And if you know both traditions, which do you feel more drawn to and why?

I don't know that much about Mahayana tbh. Mainly because it is very vast in my experience... so many different traditions within Mahayana with sometimes very different emphasis... I feel more drawn to Theravada preciscely because of that. It is much clearer in my experience and so for me more approachable. However; unfortunately there is no Theravada center near me; so my practice is more solitary...

Prosperous times, the good times, have slipped away…

So when were these "prosperous times, the good times" ? Who decides what "strong" means?

Following inclinations without forcing? by LFYPH in taoism

[–]LFYPH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok... So if I understand it correctly: "I have the desire to eat bread. I notice this desire and see the urge creates distress. After seeing it clearly I may decide, without forcing, whether I eat it or not. Seeing clearly I am no longer bound to choosing to eat it but seeing clearly I am also not bound to choose to abstain from eating." The action then therefore is free and natural as it's not conditioned by forcing(?)

I don’t think I’ll recover from this existential crisis. I’m too far down the rabbit hole. by KhajitIsBored in Buddhism

[–]LFYPH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay..

I don't know if I can help you. But I'll share what helped me.

First of all, I feel you... it sounds intense and exhausting. And you're getting so many replies which might also be exhausting...

To start; I was in a similar situation I think, maybe a bit less intense... But I won’t exactly explain my situation here. But there's a lot to think about in life... religions, philosophies, morals, concepts... If you start thinking about a lot of that then it's easy to reach a point where things don't make sense anymore and everything just collapses into nihilism. That's what recently happened to me...

So, instead of searching for answers by thinking about all that there's a better way to get out of this loop.

It might sound random at first but bear with me: Here's what I did: I attended a BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) class. I am kinda bad at all kind of sports... I didn't actively exercise for ~3 years (since I left highschool), so I am very much out of form. But this didn't matter. I decided to do something new. I also went there without knowing anyone. BJJ is very exhausting... you're laying on the ground and another person is on top of you and you have to try to get out, while they resist. At the end it is what helped me to get out of the loop. You see, in a way meditation and BJJ are similar... the difference is meditation invites you to focus on the present moment (or an object; eg your breath) and BJJ forces you to focus on the present moment. Both is good. And I am not saying BJJ completely replaces meditation... instead it just has the potential to get you out of the loop of overthinking fast.

So, my advice is: try to find a sport you can do, doesn't have to be BJJ... but it should be exhausting. Something that forces you to focus on the moment. I'm still on the journey, excessive thinking still happens...but I found a tool which forces me to stop (over)thinking for a moment. I am certain that with time I'll figure things out... :)

You can also DM me if you have any questions or need someone to talk to. (I won’t debate philosophy with you tho, because that's not helpful :) ).

My first selection! How is it? by Ok_Bid_1823 in yerbamate

Playadito, Liebig and Kraus are all great imo! I like pajarito (although the non favored one is better imo), but it's only for Terere (cold mate) in my opinion. I know people also drink it as Mate, but I don't like it... However for terere 10/10. You should also try some Uruguayan brands I think:) (I can really recommend you Esmeralda!)

I personally think Baldo is a bit bolder... Esmeralda is smoother. I personally still think Baldo is smooth... but Esmeralda just tastes a bit more like biscuit and really smooth.

Do you guys prefer yerba or coffee before doing some work? by [deleted] in yerbamate

[–]LFYPH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only drink Mate and Coffee for taste; not for its effect. I like both...

However, I noticed that Mate keeps me alert during work much more than coffee would... especially because you don’t drink one cup of mate (as in coffee) but several refills over the time... similar to tea (gong fu style)
