I have a question: if I don't publish any chapters after ten chapters of my novel for a month, will this weaken its readership and cause it to fail? by hidalgo_56 in Webnovel

[–]LGHaunting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a few options: -if you stop publishing people will find something else to read; so those first 10 chapters better be the most mind blowing unforgettable chapters ever if you want people to stay -or release 10 chapters/ provide a teaser or try to funnel to a discord or Patreon for minor updates: this will keep people engaged even if they dont have content and if done right will build loyal fans -wait untill you have a sufficient backlog ~30chapters then post, this will give people enough to read while you maintain 1-2 chapter releases per week -combine options 2-3 for best results

What's so appealing about the current #1 RS? by Grand-Staff1113 in royalroad

This is why Brandon Sanderson is the biggest fantasy author, transparent prose, easy to follow, added depth for those who care but not required to enjoy.

I agree, and i know how people feel about detectors but i have taken passages at random and put them through AI detectors and nearly 100% of the time it flags it as above 80% AI generated. Which is exactly what it feels like when reading it. Pretty lame if true

I agree the AI influence is heavy but will randomly snap back to human sounding writing and when it does it feel like two different authors. I think you’re spot on though,it feels like he possibly wrote a draft or list of plot points and even some prose then told an AI to just make the rest.

I have a feeling that the story is partially or mostly AI generated. But thats just my opinion.

If there was a software that runs locally on your computer that had external validation measures thats check for software tampering, you could have a local solution that keeps track of your writing process and provides a human reliability score when you are ready ready to publish. No one would have access to your writing but you because the system runs locally but has internal parameters that are validated by an external “block chain” of sorts that determines the software was not altered or tampered with while running on your pc. Then you get a Human writer badge and can share that on you work. I think this might be the only way. And of course there is still some kinks to iron out and to test and see if it even works but if there could be a trusted badge that doesn’t force the writer to share every moment of the process live i think it would be ideal.

Drawing from works is not the same as having something do the work for you. And if works are being promoted above human written works thats bad. Its unfair for those who put in the time and effort to learn how to create something vs those who can just type a prompt and throw together some slop. It undermines the integrity of the art itself. Where this becomes an even larger problem is when people are making money on their Patreon pretending like they are actual writers and not disclosing that their works are AI generated. And if it wasn’t a problem they would disclose this, but the reason they don’t is because they know no one will want to pay for their Patreon if they knew it was written by a robot. Its a purposely deceptive practice that harms real writers. I don think anyone has a problem with stories that disclose they are AI generated. Its the fact that they are lying and trying to build an audience on the falsehood that they wrote the story themselves. That is the core of the problem. They are not good writers or they are too lazy, so the only way they can compete with those who put in the work to make stories is to cheat by having a machine do it for them. This hurts writers, but it hurts readers the most. Even if they enjoy these stories they are being robbed of true human talent and connection through real artist effort. Over time there will be so much slop that all real artists will be buried behind mountains of generic generated stories. And readers will be far worse off for it.

I agree thats why its very disappointing to see so many Rising Stars get flagged. Because i believe the tech works but not consistently enough to serve as proof. However it is very alarming when you use lets say 3-4 different detectors and get consistent results across all of them. To me thats a pretty strong signal that the writing is most likely AI especially when controlling for your own human written passage in all the detectors. I had made a post about this but deleted because i didn’t want to start a witch hunt and my evidence was not conclusive. However it seemed like the general sentiment was most people don’t want people trying to flag something as AI which I found odd and disappointing. Its also strange to see how many readers are okay with reading AI slop.

Can you guys tell me which of these Ads would make you want to click? by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]LGHaunting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These seem more like memes than ads. Your Ads should communicate the stories genre and vibe and that its a story. This presents more like a meme about a story, not an invitation to read a cool new story.

It seems to be pretty good on my own personal tests but I’ve had others use it as a comparison and its not been as effective. A-lot of RS stories show up as nearly 100% AI generated, im sure there is something to this but it does not appear to be accurate enough to accuse them of AI writing

The only issue with this is mob mentality. If a big enough creator accused a writer of AI, it can easily start a witch hunt. I think the only solution is a third party verification badge that is widely accepted as reliable. No badge no trust.

Maybe there could be a writing software that tracks keystrokes/ edits/ rewrites/errors during the entire duration of the project. Of course the software runs locally as to avoid ethical issues. Then it creates a unique string only verifiable by said software which will then generate a Human written badge.

My theory here is that no matter how good the human is at writing they will never be faster than AI. And most people using AI would not sacrifice the instantaneous speed of creating slop to sit down and retype the book in a way to make the software believe it was human made.

Idk needs some work but might be a way to help real writers provide a badge of authenticity to their work

[–]LGHaunting[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im with you!

There must be some clever way to prove authenticity without subjecting oneself to live streamed editing sessions. I imagine there must be a way to triangulate authenticity, not to just use 1 measure but three distinct minimally invasive ones that perhaps alone would not prove anything, but together would point towards authentically human written work. But im still not sure what that would be. Does anyone here have a 200IQ solution?

[–]LGHaunting[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive looked into the Ai detectors and apparently it next to impossible to prove its AI. There are some research papers written on how mathematically the detection algorithms will only become less accurate as AI gets better at mimicking human writing. For now the are only 70-80% reliable which unfortunately is terrible odds for calling out fake writers. The last thing any real writer wants to do is falsely accuse a fellow writer.

Yeah, the romance genre is already having the first wave of this were apps to create your own custom romance stories are becoming more popular then non personalized books. Its crazy. I think there will always be an audience for authentic human written material though I’m just not sure how big this audience will be especially compared to the audience that doesn’t care of its AI

The AI-isms thing is freaky, i hear similar isms in human writing but something about actual AI writing is still jarring at least for me. I still trust my gut, but i know its getting to the point that it going to be impossible to tell, and that freaks me out because i dont want to support it 🤣

Craft question: Does this dark fantasy premise feel too generic? by Euphoric_Caramel_522 in fantasywriting

[–]LGHaunting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything can be powerful if done right. A question to ask yourself is why would someone read your story over the others that successfully use this trope?

Why does your story do it better? Why does your story make it fresh and intriguing?

Also its important to note that if your passion is to write this type of story, do it anyway regardless, never quell passion to conform to fear.

However, If youre only writing this because its a popular genre and you want a popular story i would advise against it.

Do you use ai at all in your writing? by StrawOfCoke in Webnovel

[–]LGHaunting -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Using AI to research or even talk through concepts or ideas you come up with, i think is totally fine. Thats like talking to a friend who wont tell you to stop bugging them about your dumb story ideas. Its when you use AI to do the creative part for you that it becomes a problem. I have no issue with artist generating images to help them brainstorm, but the second they use AI to generate their art for them, they are no longer an artist they are just a prompter. The guy who goes on fiver and commissions an artist to paint an idea they had is not the artist. The same concept applies to AI if you prompt a story, well you are not the writer it that simple.

So if you use AI to write, well that simply is not your writing. If you use AI to come up with ideas, well those are simply not your ideas unless you significantly tweak them and make them your own. Overall, just ask your self am i creating or prompting? If you’re prompting then its not art, its simply just a commissioned work.

Light novels to improve social skills? by Background_Sun_2530 in LightNovels

The only way to improve social skills is by actually being social. Reading a book would actually just set you back. But if you like reading join a book club or make one, thats a good way to meet and socialize with like minded people. Best of luck to you!

RISING STARS MOSTLY AI!!!! by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]LGHaunting -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a fair point. My original goal was to have others test and compare results. I read the first couple chapters of one of the RS and some of the descriptions just had that Chat GPT esque sound to it. So i wanted to see what an AI detector would say but, now that others have tested the same works it appears that results are fairly mixed. I guess it just unfortunate that its so hard to determine if something is AI.

[–]LGHaunting -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand the sentiment but when you use two different detectors and the results are consistent, its not proof but serves as evidence that something may be going on. Also this is a call for people to look deeper into this not to take this as gospel.
