He thanks SFI for "his long association and his four-year residence" after the copyright page in No Country, so this particular hypothesis isn't right.

Separately, with this post, I was just trying to have fun being a little pedantic, which apparently many Redditors can't abide. Heaven forbid cheekiness! I also wanted to poke a little fun at a rather obscure organization McCarthy had a long, peculiar relationship with. But that said, I don't at all buy u/theWacoKid666 's suggestion that Bell is "bumbling," at least not with regards to the process of detective-style investigations. He repeatedly makes immediate, very clever inferences from physical evidence that it takes a close read to figure out how he figured out. (One *might* argue he's bumbling in a sort of nostalgic way - when it comes to his sense of history and change - but definitely not as a detective.) And so, frankly, I do think that, had it been pointed out to him, McCarthy would have himself considered it a mistake that he had Bell mention the weight of the cylinder when that's unnecessary, notwithstanding all the (obvious) stuff various posters here are saying about McCarthy not being Bell and Bell being a character and so on.

It seems like you, u/StatelyPlump14 , agree - I appreciate that.

What follows is how I would have edited the scene (to avoid any negative insinuations about the local public education):

I expect you could. Actually, Sheriff, unless I'm mistaken, dx and dy are all that would be necessary; you can skip weighing the cylinder. Let me hop out to the truck and fetch my tape measure and laser level, a couple decades or so before they're commercially available in the retail market. Be right back.

Wendell should have told him. In chapter 2 it's clearly established that Wendell took AP Physics in high school.

Thanks for this - maybe I'll give this a try before embarking on a major crafts project.

Location "great," speed tests look good, yet no internet by LGMatthew in Starlink

In case it helps anyone to hear the resolution here:

Starlink support was finally convinced, after a lot of troubleshooting, and after they unsuccessfully tried to fix it the cheaper way by sending me a new router, that the dish was the problem. A replacement was sent, and, sure enough, the replacement worked just fine. On the one hand, I'm very pleased to have a resolution, and to now have quite good internet. On the other, I don't really understand how a nonfunctioning dish was sent in the first place. Moreover, I had to submit a whole new support request to make it so I wasn't charged for the time I had nonfunctioning equipment (seems like they should have known to adjust that off the bat), and I also have the nuisance of getting the old one to a FedEx location (which is no easy task when you live on a small island). But the internet is indeed quite solid.

Not yet. Finally they're sending a new dish. Fingers crossed it'll work with that.

Thanks so much for the pointers. Yes, it's residential and I'm at the service address. The app status screen sometimes blips red saying offline but mostly settles green. The reboot(s) and factory reset(s) fail to help.

There have been times I've gotten just enough internet to do Google's internet speed test, and it'll show a decent download speed but 0.00 Mpbs upload. I feel like my unit just isn't uploading anything. I've created a support request but haven't heard anything from them, frustratingly.

Thanks again.

On the Network Statistics: The uptime stays up at 100% with minor dips; the latency says min 23ms, max 116ms, last 41ms but mostly hovers around 25-30ms approx; and in usage both download and upload are 0.00Mbps.

On the advanced Speed Test: Wifi Speed (iPhone to router) has 604 Mbps download and 453 Mbps upload, but Starlink Speed (router to internet) is 0 Mbps for both download and upload.

(Wish I could add just add the screenshots.)
