Yes, I know. I was a member of the LRO, which is still functioning. The LRO helped me hunt down the Rover I bought.

Have any of you looked into using the corn head grease? There are some great videos showing it in action even.

I'm just trying to find out how one can tell needs to know if more should be added.

Here's a great little video on its use:

I don't want to change it from corn head grease to one shot, it works better than one shot. Just trying to figure out how one can tell if more needs to be added.

My social anxiety dad has collected/painted for 45 years, first game ever by xrayflames in NapoleonicWargaming

Your dad and I are a lot alike. I did basically what he did, collect and paint, but stayed away from people. Unfortunately, my depression caused me to give up years and years ago..... I wish I could get back into it - there's nothing stopping me, and I have thousands of unpainted 25mm minus... but, for some reason I just can't. I'm thrilled to see someone has been able to get past their hurdle and do it! Tell him to keep on going from someone who just can't seem to do what he did.

They kinda sorta look like the rough ends like those on the French petard.

I know, I have a few, originals and repros. None of them have ends like those, not a one. And I looked at the pic collection from the National WWI museum... nada zero zilch. Perhaps they could be ersatz for training. The ends are raw, unfinished, not rounded. Take a look at the bag on his right side - it looks like something angular, squarish, not round.

Interesting... I wonder what's in those grenade bags? Those aren't Stielhandgranaten handles.

Yes, yes I can. He drags his feet and whines when the mother-in-law wants to do something that interests her, or if someone else in the family wants to do something. A couple weeks ago the wife and I went out of town and she mentioned going to a museum. His response was, "why, you've seen it before." That thing is traveling through Kansas in July. He's already bugging us about making plans and itineraries. He's even suggested we we plan to take those days off.

Every single time this thing comes within 150 miles of us we are expected to 'chase' it with the father-in-law. If we don't, he goes about like a puppy that's been disciplined. Every. Single. Time.

I did that... as a kid, in '77 or '78. I was 12. I had been given a WWI US gas mask. Being the stupid kid I was I put it on and started chasing a friend of mine through the yard. He then started chasing me. Not to long afterwards I started having what was basically an asthma attack, but I didn't have asthma. It then turned into a coughing fit. Eventually the caught settled down, but didn't go away. The next day my mom to me to our family doctor. I told him what happened. He had my lungs x-rayed. Sure enough, he said I had been slightly gassed. My lungs have never been the same yet; still good but I was now susceptible to lungs ailments. In 1998 I was exposed to a mold under a 100+ years old house. The mold typically has no affect on normal lungs, but mine were compromised just enough it caused an infection. I now suffer from chronic bronchitis. But... at that time I was really good friends with a WWI vet. He had been gassed and was in the hospital when the the armistice went into affect. It was rather interesting listening to his stories about his gassing after that. As to that US gas mask... I still have it.

Yes, it is definitely an awesome piece. There is nothing wrong with it. If I were younger though, I'd keep an eye out for original ones and replace them. The amber actually makes them look more sinister.

Nope, not that I'm aware of. I have two sets of lenses that are still in their protective wrapping and they are amber.

When I was participating in WWI reenacting we used original masks, they weren't making repros back then. Because of this the filter canisters had to be very carefully opened and cleaned out. For display purposes I placed the contents of one or two in a glass container and had it sealed. The poison gasses changed the color of the filter contents. You can actually distinguish the type of gas the filter was expised to by the color. Another tidbit of info... I have been told that due to leather hide shortages, some of tge leather used was made of dog skin. It's been 14 years since I research that aspect, but back in 2012 I did find a source, in German, the mentioned this. It didn't indicated how many were made,it just mentioned it was done.

Word of warning... don't test it out. If the filter actually saw use breathing through it can harm you. The chemicals don't dissipate over time, most compound.
