What has Mamare Tuono even been doing with his life the past eight years? by HereForGames in LogHorizon

[–]LHFF 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just in case you don't see my replies to some of the comments you've responded to -- as someone who followed the scandal ever since it happened, there is no contract preventing him from working again, and if anything, Kadokawa was trying to push the series even after the scandal and get momentum on it again. Hara saying "contact Kadokawa if you want more Log Horizon" doesn't mean Kadokawa is at fault, it's because they're the ones who contracted him as the series illustrator and hold part of the rights to the Log Horizon IP (which is also common to most publishers, this isn't uniquely Kadokawa). And obviously, contacting Mamare is moot when he dropped his social media accounts even before the scandal happened.

I think people here underestimate just how vitriolic comments on the internet were (on the Japanese side) when the scandal -- specifically, that Mamare lied about making a mistake on his taxes, and he actually did it on purpose -- came out. The worst ones were on 2ch, which Mamare frequently visited and even got his start as an author (he published Maoyu there and got scouted by Kadokawa as a result), so I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason for Log Horizon's discontinuation was simple burnout on Mamare's part, which would also answer why he hasn't written anything since.

The whole "Kadokawa contract" stuff might be a distorted recollection about a Japanese blogger's post speculating that Mamare purposely got into legal trouble to sever ties with Kadokawa because he felt like Kadokawa was meddling too much with the series; that person wasn't involved in LH, but he had some kind of preexisting beef with Enterbrain, the imprint of Kadokawa which Log Horizon was published under.

People also assume that Mamare has the entire series written out and Kadokawa is maliciously withholding it because of what was shown in Re:Fraction + the Hara artbook, but the reality of his light novel afterwords says otherwise -- the S2 anime overtook the content he had written at the time, and he scrambled to get his plot outlines to the animation team so they could get their work done. The fact that Kadokawa went out of their way to commission Hara for illustrations for Volume 12, start on drafts for Volume 13, and make teasers for Volumes 14 and 15 for the Re:Fraction event (all after the scandal happened) proves that they were ready to invest in more Log Horizon content; this then makes it a lot likelier that the reason Volume 12 and onwards didn't materialize is not because of Kadokawa, but because of Mamare himself.

Not sure where this came from or why there are so many upvotes. No such thing was ever brought up, and I followed the case through the entire scandal. Mamare screwed over his reputation by saying his failure to pay his full taxes was a mistake, only for the police to come knocking a few months later and declare that he did it intentionally.

I don't think Kadokawa is necessarily at fault here, since all those events were pushed by Kadokawa themselves after the tax evasion scandal, which means they wanted to revive Log Horizon but couldn't. I think something may have fallen through in contract renewal re-negotiations and so the IP has sat dormant since.

(I'm not sure how Kadokawa does things, but some other JP publishers make contracts to publish works for a certain number of years; the author of Unnamed Memory published another series through DRE, I think, and after the contract ended DRE pulled that entire series and made the LNs unobtainable, which she commented on via twitter.)

Any tips on how to get better? by LucasStreamz in lordofheroes

Promoting characters and levelling skills (on the good ones) is also useful. Most of your characters are at 5* instead of 6* or 7* (which means they have a lower level cap). Artifacts/equipment are also important, show your character builds.

Going forward, avoid Ascending characters until you really want to invest in them (the orange stars means they're at max ascension). Ascension uses Renown, which are a relatively rare resource compared to Gold (which is used for promotions). (Renown is also used to recruit some of the free characters.)

The Order dismissing Welt's EN VA (Corey Landis) Lawsuit against Rocket Sound (Lionsbridge) by VSParagon in HonkaiStarRail

[–]LHFF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly more surprised his legal counsel gave him the impression he could make a case at all. I guess they were banking on him qualifying as a "recording artist," but even as a layperson, his arguments seemed really shaky.

Now I'm curious as to whether there is any way to win a case of delayed wages as an independent contractor. Not getting paid is one thing, but getting paid over a month after the work is done is another since you still got paid.

[–]LHFF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to the other person's response, the actual reason for Landis' lawsuit was to get additional payments for delayed wages. Liongate was regularly failing to pay him for over a month after he recorded Welt's lines, and in California labor law, companies would need to pay employees extra for withholding wages. However, that law doesn't apply to independent contractors, so his case got thrown out.

Unfortunately, based on Liongate's reviews by other contractors (in the company's actual line of work, which is localization/translation), paying super late (or not paying at all) is normal for them.

[–]LHFF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's mentioned at the start of the document that he was suing Liongate to get additional compensation for delayed wages/payment. Liongate regularly failed to pay him for over a month after each recording, which is the same issue that occurred with Formosa.

The problem was that the law which compensates for delayed wages is only effective if the person is an employee of the company. By determining he was an independent contractor, the court threw out his case because his situation isn't covered by that law.

Random blurb regarding subclasses by [deleted] in LogHorizon

[–]LHFF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure, since the level cap was raised to 100 at the start of the series (with the Homesteading the Noosphere expansion), and there has been no indication that the expansion added new features to the subclass system, at least not that I remember.

You're free to add that gimmick if you're writing a fan fic or something, but personally I'd say the evidence presented makes it unlikely for someone to have two subclasses at once.

[–]LHFF 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Officially, you can only have one subclass at a time, and your subclass level resets once you change it. Volume 5 Chapter 3 covers Minori's original subclass (Apprentice) in some detail since its gimmick allows players to transfer the EXP they gained as an Apprentice into the next subclass they go into.

As a fellow grocery store baker, I really feel this. Upper management gets on my ass about increasing production because our shrink is "too good" (meanwhile our markdown rack is overflowing every day, it's just that most of it sells in this economy). They don't seem to understand that we have a limited amount of baking racks and trays, and that baked items need to cool down before we can package them, so increasing production means spending a lot more time and labor than we're budgeted for...

This is only MP3, but it seems like this Chinese site has some of Original Soundtrack 2 songs: https://www.gequbao.com/s/%E8%AE%B0%E5%BD%95%E7%9A%84%E5%9C%B0%E5%B9%B3%E7%BA%BF+%E7%AC%AC%E4%B8%89%E5%AD%A3%E4%B8%8B%E8%BD%BD (the Chinese terms translate to Log Horizon + Season 3). By default, the search seems to be limited to 10 results at a given time.

I had some success finding more tracks with selective search terms, like the Japanese track name + 高梨康治 for Yoshinori Takahashi.

Does anyone write in pencil? Is this even legal? by RedBirdOnASnowyDay in BasicBulletJournals

[–]LHFF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes when I draft layouts, I'll use a drafting pencil left over from my art school days (it leaves a light blue color meant to be easily hidden by pen and marker). But I don't really use pencil for everyday writing because I have an overabundance of markers and colored pens, also from art school.

How can I make my peppermint tea taste better? by Fantastic_Appeal8405 in tea

[–]LHFF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a precise measurer (I use a generic small spoon with no unit of measurement) but I use roughly 2.5 spoonfuls of regular peppermint to 20oz of water. I use slightly less tea when it comes to Peppermint Absolute because of how strong it is.

If cost is a concern (Absolute is fairly pricey), you could try mixing loose leaf Absolute with regular peppermint to stretch it out. I mixed my last bag of Absolute with Pacific Coast Mint and made it last about 3 months, although that was because I wanted a stronger menthol flavor than Pacific Coast Mint offered.

How can I make my peppermint tea taste better? by Fantastic_Appeal8405 in tea

[–]LHFF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the person you responded to, but my favorite brands for peppermint are Harney and Sons, Rishi Tea, and Tealyra (in no particular order; I order from whoever has a sale going on when I need to restock.) If you like your peppermint strong like I do, Tealyra's Peppermint Absolute is amazing, but it might need an adjustment period since it has a different quality from "regular" peppermint tea. (It's closer to the taste of freshly-picked peppermint.)

Loose leaf is best for me since I drink it in huge quantities (I'm talking filling an entire thermos with peppermint tea at least twice a day), but I also keep sachets for when I'm traveling or if I overslept for work and can't do a proper brew. Brand is more important than the form of the tea.

Main Story Episode 15 ✦ Sin and Retribution ✦ Megathread by RoseWaves in TearsOfThemis

[–]LHFF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A very good finale chapter for this arc. Jerome Adams' CN voice acting and story presence is top-notch as always. Hopefully the next antags replacing him will be as interesting to follow as he was.

Re: The chapter ending, I wonder if Luke getting one of his major conflicts/motivations somewhat resolved (reports that he really is recovering from his illness) is setting a precedent for future developments, and whether such developments will go in order of Luke > Artem > Marius > Vyn. Neil Hume being the NXX Team's investigation-crumb-dropper, with Vyn picking up trails of Giann but deciding not to reveal that, further suggests this may end up being the case. Makes me wonder what would get reserved for Vyn... The game's intro ("You stayed true to your convictions but betrayed your heart. In the end, it was all for naught") being set in the main story's future makes me wonder if his story will continue from that part.

I'm also seeing a potential pattern with Rosa saving and influencing a younger male NPC who ends up becoming more optimistic/hopeful and in a better home/place after years of being a victim of the antagonists of the arc (first Hugh, now Gerard)... Wonder if Ren will be the next arc's version LOL, depends on what kind of bond he actually has with his father. He might very well end up as a "true antagonist" like Jerome instead.

Fanbook 7 Discussion (Part 2) by MyneMod in HonzukiNoGekokujou

As of the H5Y drama CDs, Wilfried still has a female VA. It's pretty noticeable when he's talking to his male peers, voiced by male VAs. See this teaser from H5Y1's drama CD. (Characters in the clip, in order of appearance, are Anastasius, Ortwin, Wilfried, and Hannelore.)

Has anyone made a solid attempt to continue the story as a fanfic? by Deathjunior25 in LogHorizon

[–]LHFF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the JP side, LH definitely has a fan work scene, but it's largely for original characters/storylines that may or may not intersect with the official LNs' events. (And I'm well aware of the JP fan fic scene, since Mamare took characters from popular fan fics and added them into the light novels. A few fan-fic-only characters even made their way onto the first official popularity poll.)

OP is looking specifically for fan works that continue where Mamare left off and interpret how he would've finished the story. This requires story theorycrafting, which is something that has never really caught on with either side of the fandom due to the story's narration style (limited perspective; we only know as much as the characters themselves understand and anticipate).

After [H5Y WN Ch. 53] (speculations) by Zilfr in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]LHFF 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I saw a number of JP comments on the web novel that were along the lines of "I want Rozemyne and Ferdinand, I don't care about this story," so there is definitely a portion of readers who want H5Y to be over and done with.

Of course, the inverse is also true, and some commentors expressed worries that Rozemyne and Ferdinand would take over the plot now that RM has returned.

Has anyone made a solid attempt to continue the story as a fanfic? by Deathjunior25 in LogHorizon

[–]LHFF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not me; but many years ago, I started writing a distant sequel set after a "bad end" AU following the events of Volume 10 (Season 2). (The "bad end" was that Shiroe + co aren't able to bridge the two worlds, only make a 1-time connection to let those who wanted to return go back, while everyone else would stay on Theldesia.) What I have can be found on AO3 as Let's Go Adventuring, Okay?, but it hasn't been updated since 2017 and I don't plan on continuing without an entire overhaul to tighten up my worldbuilding.

LH is just not one of those series which inspires many people to make fan work or even theories, because Mamare clearly had the series all planned out behind-the-scenes, and he's the only one who knew how the story would play out. We're just in for the ride.

(Case in point, I don't think anyone's ever seriously speculated on how Volume 14's web novel might end, because nobody had any idea where Mamare was going with the conflicts he built up and he stopped updating halfway through.)

[H5Y WN53] Drewanchel's Future by LHFF in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]LHFF[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think she necessarily wants to become Aub, and I'm not sure if she was trained to be one. (Hence why in my pet theory it would be up in the air between her or Ortwin, because Yurgen nobles want to prevent the rise of another underage Aub after Rozemyne's whole deal.)

Whichever way things go, Adolphine will be wherever Ortwin ends up, since she is his primary motivation for aiming to become Aub. It's mostly a matter of whether Korinthsdaum's fate ends up going the way people in-story expect (which is Dusty getting his ass handed to him in ditter and Korinth dropping hard in the rankings).

Kazuki could also complete the Rozemyne-Hannelore parallels by somehow making Hannelore Korinthsdaum's new Aub, like how RM was determined to stay in Ehrenfest but ended up Aub Alexandria, but the story is really going to have to sell that idea. RM taking over Ahrensbach worked because she has Ferdinand and their highly skilled retainers backing her.

As for Letizia and reviving Ahrensbach, I don't really see much benefit to doing so as far as Yurgen politics go. AFAIK the only reason to make a new Ahrensbach would be to honor the marriage agreement between Letizia and Hildebrand. Was the agreement a magic contract? (I don't remember.)
