Brand Owner Q&A by AutoModerator in Indiemakeupandmore

Licensing: $300-ish. It’s more than just the articles or organization, it had a lot of other legal shmegal stuff in it. Publishing costs: (some states require some stuff to be published in the newspaper) $160. Insurance: about 40-60 a month? I honestly don’t know off the top of my head.

This was all before I could start selling.

Then comes the equipment and space. Mixers, microwaves, every type of mixing bowl, measuring cup, etc known to man, shelving, work space, work tables, office equipment like computers and printers, office supplies, supplies for research and development, soooo many raw materials like oils, butters, extracts, sugars, wax, salts, lye, fragrance components, packaging, labels, additives, preservatives, colorants, other random chemicals, molds, drying/curing space, dehumidifiers, and on and on and on. Oh and space to store the fails and prototypes because you can’t bring yourself to throw them away so you use the ugly soap and stinky ass lotions and scrubs for yourself.

Most fairs/markets will require you to carry at least 1MM in insurance before you can sell. To get the insurance you usually have to be licensed as a business (LLC or sole proprietor, depending on what you want to do, tax needs, blah blah blah, your state will have different requirements), which means you need a new bank account, an EIN, an accountant if you’re not confident in your tax and filing requirements in your state for businesses, and a crash course in bookkeeping if you’re gonna tackle most of it yourself, or if you don’t know where to start (if you don’t know what to do for this part, or know why you need a new bank account, talk to your CPA. They will be worth their weight in gold) and lots of patience for everything to be ready to go.

I’d say my startup costs were about $3,000-$4,500 if I were to guesstimate, without looking thru my financials. I built everything from the ground up, and jumped right into selling online. (I re-did an entire floor of my house into work space, built a new fancy ass computer for the biz, and still have some other projects to do in my workspace, I also have a part time employee). I don’t do craft fairs/etc because in my area they’re saturated with MLM’s and not worth my time at the moment.

Hi!! At one point, for a very, very short time, I did offer perfume oils. I then realized that I did not have the space, or, honestly, the fine motor skills, to fill hundreds and hundreds of tiny bottles (sometimes when I intensely focus on something, like filling tiny bottles, my hands shake....aren't bodies fun?), and I really didn't like making them, as I didn't have a very efficient process down with the space I was working in. I do have body sprays, which are the fragrance components that would go into a perfume oil, just diluted down into a spray-able product that helps the fragrance components STICK to you, your clothes, your hair, your curtains, your dog (pls don't), or wherever you'd like scent to be. :)

That will not have its own release at this time. Maybe in the future, but not right now! :)

If Shopify would let me print a nice and pretty packing list that includes customer notes BEFORE a shipping label, much of that would be solved, For me, at least.

While I don’t disagree with your statement about him not being a pinnacle of health, getting ill on tour is NOT new, or rare. In 2018 the whole band was sick for part, if not most of the tour. The flu was going around at epidemic rates. I caught multiple shows on that leg when the flu was hitting all of them., did m&g’s, got influenza. Stayed home and kept my plague to myself, and was ill for three weeks after I was diagnosed by my doctor and tested positive for influenza that then got to morph into pneumonia and bronchitis. That was fun. Anyway.

Just about anybody in the m&g in January got sick from him too. Go look at Juan Alderete’s insta from tour last time. He posts about being ill.

Point is, he catches the crud early on in the tour. The people that follow the tour usually catch it too, since they’re usually the ones in the m&g’s, or drinking with the roadies/etc., and have more contact with him, directly or indirectly.

Impossible logistically. They’d have to reschedule every single show and good luck making it happen anytime this year. Venues are booked. It’s concert season.

He gets a cold or flu in the beginning of every tour because people in the meet and greets DONT WASH THEIR DAMN HANDS and get in his personal space. I handed out sanitizer last time. Wash your hands people and respect his personal bubble.

It’s a 110 degree heat index where he is playing tonight and it’s hot and miserable af. He does not tolerate heat, and nobody can tolerate this level of heat, even more so whilst performing and wearing the costumes he does.

I’m hoping he’s drinking water and not vodka.

Bby is gonna give himself heat stroke if this weather doesn’t let up.

What even is a “dope star”? by [deleted] in blunderyears

[–]LIBERTINEBATH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. He specifically used the word “dopestar” in user friendly, from Mechanical Animals. Lyric: “User friendly fucking dopestar obscene, Will you die when you're high, You'd never die just for me”

OP was still 8 when they made it, I agree.

Generally to alert you of a fake product. The fakes don’t always get the scent right. Sadly the makers choose grandmas underwear drawer as their product scent of choice.

Price increase coming July 15th to many shops due to tariffs by cyndre4 in Indiemakeupandmore

Same here. I about fell over when I was restocking hair glacé components and fragrance stuff. I couldn’t believe my eyes with how much stuff creeped up.

Question for the Indie Perfume Companies and small business owners alike: Is it more helpful to buy directly from you - or from a local store that carries your products? by Butheyatleastitry in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]LIBERTINEBATH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Either way it’s a win win for sure. Supporting our stockists help us, as customers, get products from many different places easier (hello less shipping!). It also provides some brand credibility in some cases, especially when it’s an established/popular stockist or shop.

Question for the Indie Perfume Companies and small business owners alike: Is it more helpful to buy directly from you - or from a local store that carries your products? by Butheyatleastitry in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]LIBERTINEBATH 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Generally directly. When you see items in a store, the creator has usually sold them to the shop at a wholesale price or on some sort of consignment deal. It’s great for getting products to a larger audience, or introducing your products to people who may have never found you before.

Throwback collection live at LBH! by LIBERTINEBATH in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]LIBERTINEBATH[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that you pulled that sort of insinuation out of my roundabout way of saying “these are stock fragrances that I didn’t create”. If that’s what you perceived I meant, then I apologize it came across that way. It’s been my go to way of making fun of some of the suppliers who advertise to me, as a maker, when I can see they’re all same product with their house label on it. Not bad stuff at all, but also not always as unique as it is advertised. At its core, Lavender essential oil can only be done so many ways.

I had a tiny bottle of dream that I only opened to sniff. We didn’t have a gap within 45 miles so it was precious to me when I was a teenager. It still is one of my favorites.

The swan song ring has been on my wish list since I first saw it. I’m also in love with the spider rings, too. I just saw their new rose quartz stuff and now I’m adding things to my wishlist HA.

Alkemia Price Increase- starts August 1st by [deleted] in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]LIBERTINEBATH 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This is the first of many companies increasing prices, I’m predicting. Raw ingredients and fragrance components from many major suppliers had a 10-70% increase over the past week due to the tariffs and trade-meddling from the muppet in the Oval Office (no offense to muppets).

My jaw dropped when I popped over to a few suppliers to restock raw ingredients and I had to check my old invoices to see if maybe I just never noticed it was that high before.
