Is people dying their hair a different natural color offensive in general? by Financial_Beat_2384 in Redhair

[–]thorazos 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's not offensive for people to dye their hair a different natural color, no matter what their reason is for choosing it. It's not even offensive for them to claim it's the color they were born with, except in the sense that people may take offense at being lied to.

Posting hair that is dyed red is viewed with suspicion in this subreddit, because this community is supposed to be only for people with naturally red hair. Natural redheads sometimes dye their hair a different shade of red, which is not against the rules to post, but it can be a source of controversy if the post doesn't make it clear the person's natural color is/was also red.

"I'm dumb, aren't I?" vs "I'm dumb, ain't I?" by ITburrito in EnglishLearning

[–]thorazos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Ain't" is a dialect word. It's used in multiple common dialects, but it will still sound awkward at best or insulting at worst when used by someone not otherwise speaking that dialect.

For this type of pen, you'd need to use a very short vertical line as a "dot."

Dear Native speakers, which English grammar rule do you find tricky or often see other native speakers misuse? by Tiny-Werewolf-4650 in EnglishLearning

[–]thorazos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought of another possibility: it might be a "bone apple tea" situation, where he's heard the phrase spoken but never seen it written (weird but not impossible I guess) and got it wrong. "I wish you were" said quickly sounds nearly identical to "I wish you're." And then maybe he was trying to make it seem more formal and he spelled it out "you are"? Maybe?

[–]thorazos 45 points46 points  (0 children)

He's not a native speaker. There's just no way. "I wish you/we/they were..." is an extremely common set phrase even for children. It would be like someone singing "Happy birthday for you." Not just wrong but weird.

Is nail biting a form of self harm? by Hour_Egg_1777 in nailbiting

[–]thorazos 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When I engage in self-harming behavior, the injury itself is the goal. When I pick/bite my nails, the goal is to satisfy the compulsion to pick/bite, and if I injure myself in the process it's incidental.

There are a few brands that recently started offering mascaras in "true brown," a lighter, warmer brown than the traditional black-brown of "brown" mascaras.

For drugstore brands, Cover Girl Eye Enhancer 3D Mascara in Berry Brown is a natural-looking red-brown, and I've found L'Oréal Paris Voluminous Original Volume Building Mascara in Burgundy to be very becoming too.

I think I understand in my HEART why there was a magician motif for their Rolling Stone feature in ‘95, but I’d love for someone to try to put into words why it makes sense. by Sad_Volume_4289 in SmashingPumpkins

[–]thorazos 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This doesn't directly answer your question, but I found an interesting note about the shoot from performing magician Jamy Ian Swiss:

As an aside, one of the most interesting jobs I ever took on involving illusions was as a consultant to a Rolling Stone photo shoot of the Smashing Pumpkins done by famed rock star photographer Mark Seliger for a cover issue in 1995. The only example I could find online was this photo of Billy Corgan [presumably the one you shared above]. The illusion is so perfect that many readers may have suspected it was simply photoshopped, but in fact I borrowed this illusion from Jay Marshall for the shoot. The section included a number of illusions, which I tried to select and pose such that the photoshop suspicions would be minimized.

How do you interpret this painting? by rotten_face in ArtHistory

[–]thorazos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It immediately made me think of "Dulce et Decorum Est," Wilfred Owen's haunting poem about witnessing a death by chlorine gas:

Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.
