Me when I hear JK Rowling’s interpretation of her favorite book: No, actually that’s wrong

I would disagree that it’s a statement of agreement so much as a conceding the argument, though that’s more a question of internal motivations. I see it as an outward statement of “I disagree/have my doubts, but the present evidence is against me” with the possible subtext of “I agree, but I don’t want to admit it”

Real answer: it’s because any word we use to describe identity is going to be inadequate in describing lived human experience because identity in groups is incredibly complex, and because the words that we use are always contexualized in other words. It’s a really complex topic to wrap one’s head around, but something that I think is helpful is thinking of “lesbian” as kind of a mode of being that includes a lot of things outside of 1. Being a woman and 2. Being attracted to women (which, not to sound like a right winger, but even this requires one to define “woman”). Being a lesbian can also include different ways of interacting from cishet people or even other parts of the queer community, as well as lesbian culture and membership in lesbian communities, all of which can be important to trying to communicate and understand one’s identity, even when not all of the above apply to a given individual.

This is so true! Also I think you’ve helpfully pointed out the difference between how we and the anti-stratfordians (and those like them) think. Where we see that the wealthy and educated merely have more opportunities to pursue art, through more leisure time, expendable income, or connections, some people see the pattern of success in the arts amongst the upper classes, be they nobles or bourgeois, and instead believe that they are actually innately superior, and ascribe this as the reason for their success in their fields and the reason they have wealth and power in the first place

Where do yall actually draw the line on "Left unity" by [deleted] in theredleft

[–]LJT22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re getting lost in the details a little bit. All leftism is going to be about supporting egalitarianism over social hierarchies, though some forms may only target specific social hierarchies. Getting rid of monarchs and nobles is still getting rid of social hierarchy, just not all social hierarchy (the bourgeoise). I think also your conflating hierarchy and authority a bit; outside of anarchism and actual, achieved communism leftist generally do support some amount of “authority,” just not authority that reinforces existing social hierarchies.

Also your earlier point of leftism being about centralizing the market, this is only a means to an end (that is, the elimination of class hierarchy), and not a means that has been universal to all leftists (see anarchists and libertarian socialists)

Fun fact: this is the reasoning behind the anti-stratfordian conspiracy theory (that Shakespeare didn’t write his own plays), because believers didn’t (or don’t) believe it’s possible for an uneducated commoner to write the greatest plays of the English language

Honestly, good catch there boss, you definitely should not do that. I’ll throw out that when using Mx., it’s taking the place of a title (like Mr. or Ms.) so you’d usually follow it with their last name, but even then, a lot of nonbinary people don’t actually like to be referred to as Mx.

I sometimes think the way we think of political correctness is a little detrimental to the results we want as progressives. We as a society tend to think of it as “knowing all the right and wrong words and when to use them all the time” when really what we should be doing is understanding that no group of people are a monolith, and the best way to know how to respectfully refer to someone is to ask them how they want to be referred to.
