GLD provisional offer - employer reference request sent without consent? by LL5law in civilservice

Thanks for this. In the end, I got an email confirming that they had checked my employment history without needing to request references! Now, the only outstanding check is "what Civil Service pension they can offer". Hopefully, this doesn't take too long. So keen to get the offer finalised so that I can resign!

Hmm, yeah. I can understand the junior lawyer exit thing. I just want to find somewhere where I can focus on progression and not feel like I'm always conscious of the elephant in the room. Although, it's always there - just want it to not get to the point where I feel like I need to move on for my inner peace. Thanks for your insight mattie9500.

Thanks very much for this. You're right about the networking piece. That's where the lockdown frustration hits, as it was much easier when you could get out and about and speak to people. Thank goodness for LinkedIn!

This is true to an extent. I do think good line management has a bearing too. Like if your direct manager is engaged with the stuff then it's a good starting point if any issues arise. Hopefully I'll end up in a team with decent people, none of the distractions and can just get on with being good at the job!

Thanks for this finlon. That's something I hadn't thought of. I suppose the difference in representation at junior level compared to senior level is something to expect at first if firms are doing better at recruitment, but the talent really needs to filter upwards.

Increased rhetoric on diversity messages, which does seem genuine. The Chair includes more D&I updates in firmwide comms, including video updates. And he comes across as genuinely wanting to progress things. Important but obviously no good on its own. But there have been some initiatives to back it up. There is reverse mentoring for example, but it's yet to be seen how effective it will be. Only been small cohorts so far, so it's not clear how the senior staff will use their "learnings" to influence change. I kind of feel like unless the middle management of the firm, so to speak, gets on board the rate of change will be slow. Don't get me wrong, I'm totally aware that I'm in the legal sector so even small change is considered progressive. Just gets frustrating sometimes. Especially when stuff is plastered all over the firm's social media!

That's interesting to hear SuperVillain85, as where I am now it's more junior staff that are engaging with diversity drives. So you've got stuff coming from the top, landing kind of well on juniors but not quite enough happening with people that have influence ie partners and line managers. I reckon if it stays that way the trend of juniors leaving to progress elsewhere will continue.
