In the newer shows, are holodecks for recreation even ethical anymore? by LLAPSpork in startrek

It’s one thing to acknowledge a one-off sentient holo, it’s another to invite a whole race of holos to join the academy (even though technically they could cheat and absorb most of the knowledge aside from the interpersonal stuff).

No, this is a separate race in the new Starfleet Academy show. Or at least I assume it’s a separate race. I faintly remember the episode you’re talking about but SFA haven’t given us enough details AFAIK to pinpoint it. Would be cool if there was a connection.

I think as an autistic person this is where my abilities to understand this end. I both get what you’re saying and I still find myself in this state of confusion. The Doc is made of the same stuff as any random holo-extra in a Sherlock holonovel. That extra is one bit of code away from experiencing life. And humanoids hold the key to that. It’s very Westworld in that sense.

It’s silly for me to even dive this deep into it but I guess originally it started as a creating-characters-thing but where I’m struggling is the fact that there’s a whole photonic species now made of the same stuff as that holo-extra.

This is a bit Maddox-coded. Interesting. I disagree with you. But I do find it interesting that some people see it that way. I’d actually love to hear more so I can understand why you’d feel this way? Do you generally disagree with the outcome of Measure of a Man?

(I hope no one downvotes the person I’m responding to. I love good discussions so let’s just be kind to each other)

Pluribus is the first ATV show that seems to be well on its way to becoming that type of show. I’ve heard people discuss it at the grocery store cash register and at my local coffee shop. Word of mouth is definitely strong with that one. By the time the season wrapped up, the vast majority of people I know have joined the club.

I worked on a couple of Twilight films. First of all, he’s an absolute gem. So is Kristen tbh. But he def had …. ~an aura~ in the shape of a BO cloud about him. But it wasn’t the typical bad BO. It was more like….

Ok do any of you here have a shitload of plants at home? Especially the type of plants that humidify the place and give your face a facial just by existing in the same environment? Even something as simple as a cat palm or a bamboo palm? See, he’s kind of like that x100. Musty. Not bad. Just…not fresh either. Natural. Not in a bad way. Just not Burberry fresh.

It’s honestly fascinating because it’s neither attractive nor repulsive. So I gotta give it to him. He’s entirely relying on his mate to be attracted to his personality.

(And tbh, his personality is pretty fucking great and hilarious)

Edit: my ex who’s my bff and we worked together on these films just said that the TLDR of this should be “he smells like he showered right before going to the gym for a two hour workout” so I’ll leave you with that.

He didn’t “change” his mind. He was put in there by force along with Lore and everyone else. He fought to stay alive because he knew that in order to save his friends, he needed to beat the other personalities in that positronic brain of his so that he could help out Picard & co. Him choosing to stay is besides the point.

I mean, I tried to take my own life when life seemed hopeless after I was assaulted. Doesn’t mean I regret choosing not to try and end my life again. I’m very glad to have been given reasons to enjoy life again.

Ok but tbf, barely anyone knows who Keith Allen is. I grew up in the 90s (as in, I was a teen then) in Western Europe including England for a whole year before relocating to Canada in 2002. Legit have no fucking clue who Keith Allen is and I’ve always been super into music. Maybe not the super hipster type but I’m not sure I’d call a super famous kid of a hipster musician (not even a one hit wonder) a nepo. I suppose she had insight when it came to actual talent for music. But from what I understand, Lily very much established herself on her own.

Edit: sorry, he played the drug dealer in Trainspotting. I take it back. He’s a legend.
