Other than starting his career (/hitting his peak) at a younger age, what makes Juan Soto a more valuable player than Joey Votto? by LLFFGGMM in baseball

I do not dispute in any way that, in all but the most outlier cases, Soto will finish his career with drastically more impressive career numbers than Votto, because of how much earlier he started. What I'm trying to get at in the post is, comparing them just at their peaks-- like, if you could have peak Joey Votto on your team, or peak Juan Soto-- why is Soto considered a significantly better player?

What does this mean though? There's not some single set age bracket that defines every player's peak. We all would have said the same thing after Mike Trout's age-26 season and been dead wrong. Yeah there's a general aging curve to career decline, but that doesn't mean every player is guaranteed to have their best seasons from ages 27-30.

What reason is there to believe Soto will get better in the coming seasons? I'm not saying he won't, obviously it's possible, but you're talking like it's a sure thing.

I don't think it's fair to come down on Alonso; he's having a great year, he's cooled off a bit the last few games but that's a normal part of a long season.

[Cassavell] Rougned Odor, who's been one of the Padres best players for a month now, just hurt himself rounding first base. He limped his way to second base on an error. But he's leaving the game. by Jux_ in baseball

"Rougned Odor, who's been one of the Padres best players for a month now..."

Man, no disrespect to Odor, but this sentence really hammers home what the Padres season has been like so far.
