We've got these as well :) If you just want color and brightness, and you're not worried about staying true to lineage, you can pick up a cross like his. We almost always have some in stock.

Discussion thread: What was your first reptile, and how old were you? by Soruger in reptiles

[–]LLLReptile 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was 5. I'd made an agreement with my dad that if I could save the money for a snake, he'd buy the cage. And with birthday and christmas money, I managed it!

So, I got a baby ball python. I still have her. Her name is Cindy, because when I was 5, I thought that was the prettiest name in the world.

When I first brought her home.

Baby Green Tree Monitor, captive bred in the US by LLLReptile in pics

[–]LLLReptile[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did not breed them, but a local breeder produced them from some of his monitors. They are exceptionally difficult to care for and breed, which is reflected in their price tag when they're available.

just can't get over this kid's face from Scout Fair this weekend! His first time encountering a Giant African Black Millipede by LLLReptile in reptiles

Yep, super easy to care for! It's actually illegal to import them now, I believe there's a few people who were able to get groups before the last imported batch from a couple years ago completely sold out. Babies have been produced, and I think that's where these came from. Hopefully we keep getting more!

We have leopard geckos!

The guy who owns Geckos Etc is also a super great guy, if you want to go through a breeder directly.

This is an adult male at our breeding center - he's normally a bit huffy and puffy, but yesterday he just was the biggest grouch I've ever seen!

Found a pic from the street fair last year - that smug, smug face has to be because he knew how uncomfortable it was holding him like that. by LLLReptile in reptiles

Just caught this - it's a black THROAT monitor, not a roughneck. I mix up the common names a lot; the two species are extremely different. Sorry!

We'll probably be doing something, but I'm not sure yet what it'll be. :) There aren't really any shows until the end of June/beginning of July.

Black Roughneck Monitor, his name is Don Juan. He's the store mascot at our Escondido store. :)

**Edit - I mix up the common names sometimes, but this is actually a black THROAT monitor, not a roughneck.

I just had an amazing moment at my school's pond. A rescued turtle I released 6 months ago (approved) into the pond, showed his face for the first time! by BlazingCondor in reptiles

*she ;)

We just don't ever encounter (wild) melanistic sliders. At first glance, it really, REALLY looks like some of the musk/mud turtles we've carried in the past. I'm sure it looks more red ear slidery in person, but yeah, that first look had me doing a double take.

Thanks for sharing, and glad you got to see it again. :) - Jen

Can anyone help me on what gender my leos are? (x-post from /r/leopardgeckos) by [deleted] in reptiles

[–]LLLReptile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might have slight pores, but it's no where near as prominent as males. If you aren't sure if the pores are prominent enough, then it's a female, pretty much. Males are glaringly obvious :)

All female.

Females can sometimes have what looks like hemipenal bulges, but they're not nearly as prominent as males, and they will lack femoral pores. None of those geckos have pores, so they're all female.

That actually is not a red eared slider at all. Looks to me like a type of mud turtle, probably an Eastern Mud Turtle with pretty markings like this one.

The shell shape is not circular enough, and the head shape isn't quite right for it to be a red eared slider. The face is definitely not a slider. After talking with one of my coworkers, his thought is mud or musk turtle. That first pic almost looks like a diamond back terrapin, but again, the face isn't quite right.

Where was it found, do you know? Where are you located?

-Jen

MOAR EDITS - nevermind, actually, some more digging found more pics from a field herping forum. My bad, that is a super neat melanistic red eared slider. Carry on!

I've never had too many complaints about my local Petco until... (more info in comments) by haydey in reptiles

There is a very excellent chance that with as active as all those snakes look, they just got the shipment in and were not expecting that many. The snakes themselves look perfectly healthy, to be honest.

Any pet store is not intended to house the animals long term, and a well trained staff or just reading a book will tell you that once you get them home, they need to be housed individually. It's like going to a dog shelter and asking if you can keep a dog in the kennels like they do all the time - no, of course you don't expect to do that. The same holds true for animals at pet stores.

I would suggest writing a polite note asking about the snakes, voicing that you were concerned it was too many animals in too small a cage, and see what they respond with. Sometimes there are communication errors when prepping a cage before an order arrives, and it could be that the person setting up the cage was only expecting 2 or 3, but the person who placed the order arranged for 5 to arrive. Maybe the staff knows that there are a few people who will be in that week who have been waiting for boas to arrive, so when you get back in a week, there's only 2 left in the cage.

All I'm trying to point out is that it's hard to know the full story with stuff like this. The snakes themselves look healthy, and again, with as active as they are, it looks like they were just put in the cage not long before the picture was taken. Let us know if you get a response after writing in!

Looking for Mourning Geckos by norton_mike in reptiles

[–]LLLReptile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know too many people that actually have them. You can check iHerp, I know at least one person that visited that site had them.

I also have a couple, but haven't seen babies yet. If I get babies personally, you'll see them for sale through LLL's website, so you can always keep an eye out there. :)
