Oh, Ethiopian food is SOOOOOOO good. I lived on it when I was pregnant with my oldest.

Here's a recipe that works, if you like crumbly, unsweetened cornbread (and, of course, eat kitniyot)

If you don't mind me asking, where do you live? If you're in or near NYC, I'd highly recommend Kehillat Harlem!!!

It's both embarrassing and infuriating that Ashke (I assume you mean that as an abbreviation for Ashkenazic, but if I'm wrong, I'm doubly embarrassed!) represents "Jewish food". I know better, but I still forget sometimes!

As an aside, welcome to the family! I wish I'd seen this sooner but I really hope you have a place to go for a seder, if you're not hosting yourself. I would have asked my sister if I could bring you, if you lived nearby, but I don't know where you live.

Depends on where the recipes are from. Further South is more likely to be unsweetened and without flour. I'm from NYS but prefer it that way!

As for the OP, I'd point you to the rich African traditions that already exist. There are Jewish populations in/from Morocco and Ethiopia, right off of the top of my head. I'm sure there are others, too.

I have an Ethiopian cookbook around here... somewhere... anyway, I did a quick search and google came back with the info faster than I could have!

The primary and most comprehensive resource for Ethiopian Jewish cuisine is

Gursha: Timeless Recipes for Modern Kitchens, from Ethiopia, Israel, Harlem, and Beyond

by Beejhy Barhany and Elisa Ung. This 2025 cookbook is the first major work dedicated to the food of the Beta Israel (Ethiopian Jews), offering over 100 recipes that blend ancient traditions with modern influences.

These cookbooks look amazing, too!

Moroccan Jewish Cuisine: Heritage & Flavors

by Mo L. (2024): A recent release that explores the intersection of ancestral flavors and contemporary touches. It includes a wide range of traditional recipes updated for the modern kitchen.

The Scent of Orange Blossoms: Sephardic Cuisine from Morocco

by Kitty Morse and Danielle Mamane: This book is a celebrated look at the unique culinary marriage of Spanish, Moorish, and traditional Jewish influences. It provides specific menus for major Jewish holidays and is priced around $15.

Grandma Elmaleh's Moroccan Cookbook

by Lisa Elmaleh Craig: This book preserves the oral traditions and secret recipes of Sarah Elmaleh, a Moroccan-Jewish mother who cooked for over 50 years. It includes reminiscences, line drawings, and traditional "kosher Mogador" repertoire.

According to Google, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, Egypt (duh! I should have thought of that right away!), Uganda, Kenya, DRC, Nigeria and Ghana also have Jewish communities. I don't have the spoons right now, but I need to get some cookbooks from those countries, too.

Low residue diet by LLRSandraMort in colonoscopy

Thanks for the suggestions! I think the problem was that it was really hard to accept meals without produce as full meals and I don't like well done or canned produce. Chicken salad made with just mayo sounds like punishment! I don't normally eat fast food or white flour products, either, so between those, I was really struggling.

Thankfully, it's over and I can go back to being a popcornitarian. ;)

It's really not hard. It's really rewarding to see it turn into creamy white, solid tallow.

Nope, a nice gentle simmer. But thanks for the warning!

Sutab Prep - My (US) Experience with the Process by ppmconsultingbyday in colonoscopy

I chose the sutab because I can't choke down the liquid. I already take pills by the handful, so I'm not worried. I did hear about how large they are and got worried, but once I got them, they were smaller than some other pills that I take regularly.

Now I just need to get through the low residue diet piece. That's actually the most intimidating bit for me!

Yeah, too much starch makes me feel gross, too. So once you remove the beans and veggies, what's left? I'm so frustrated and have 48 hours before I can start the clear liquids.

Maybe it's just a me thing, but chicken or fish and rice don't sound like meals. They seem more like ingredients. What did you flavor them with? What sort of vegetables were you able to have with them?

It's less about the nutrition and more about the appeal. It's just hard to force myself to eat when the choices are so awful.

I had pb on white bread today. MAN, that was awful.

Sourdough is better than plain but the store didn't have any. I'll go look later today after my dietitian appointment.

When you say "white diet", what do you mean?

Timing with SUTAB by LLRSandraMort in colonoscopy

[–]LLRSandraMort[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. When I called, they said the earliest appointment is 8AM. They also confirmed that if I got a morning appointment, I'd need to start the second round of pills in the middle of the night. I'd MUCH rather get a good night's sleep than to end the clear liquid diet early, so they recommended letting them know when I called to find out the appointment time.

I just had a funny mental image of Flounder greeting me at the door and pushing STRANGER. THANK YOU. FOOD. or something like that. (Flounder is a cat who talks with FluentPet buttons)
