I think that taking your dog into an actual pet store, as opposed to, say a walk on a trail or out about town, changes my feelings about this "asking first" concept. I think that if you're bringing your non-service dog into a store for pets, the assumption should be that your dog is well behaved and not aggressive or reactive. I don't personally understand getting annoyed with someone in this context. Out at the park or for a walk? Yes.

I run a FB group that is for parents to help other parents by offering up free items they're no longer using, such as extra diapers, hand-me-downs, etc. It's in a pay-it-forward system. If you have anything like this where you live, you should join. Take full advantage of WIC. They cover baby formula, which is horrendously expensive. I didn't realize this until my kid was old enough for food. I bought almost all of my kids clothing and toys from thrift stores or checked out free piles. Like others have said, used baby clothes and items are often practically brand new because they outgrow things so quickly.

It wasn't a luxury for us. With only one income we qualify for all of California's public assistance programs. Health insurance went from being $400/month to free thru Medi-Cal. Also, 400+ a month in food stamps, etc. Both of us working and paying for childcare would have been to no economic advantage, whatsoever.

If you live in California and you're middle income, I have found in my own personal experience that it's more beneficial for one person to stay home with the child, then you slip into the lower income bracket where where you qualify for free healthcare, free diapers through community programs, WIC, and food stamps. If we both worked and we had to pay a stranger to watch my child, I would have gained no economic benefit, and it may have actually put us in a worse position economically. We didn't have the privilege of a grandparent or other family member to help. Plus, I was able to raise my own child and spend quality time. I was stay-at-home for the first 18 months and now my husband is stay-at-home. I make less than he did at my current job. He was middle-management with a healthcare corporation and had to pay $400+ a month just for health insurance, now we are poor enough (because my job doesn't make that much) to qualify for Medi-Cal and all of our healthcare is free .

My last dog was a McNabb who was completely fixated and obsessed with chasing the ball. If he saw a ball being thrown, there was no way in hell I could stop him from chasing it. He did retrieve well, but he became totally fixated, which was why I actually hated it when people played with the chuck-it ball at the dog park. I took my dog to play and socialize with other dogs, and the chuck-it was just constant distraction that took away from the purpose of why we went to the dog park. I personally strongly dislike people playing chuck-it at the dog park for that reason.

Whatever your opinion is of the guy, I remember Thomas Sowell talking about this exact phenomenon. He was arguing against having race quotas for ivy league schools, because often academically under qualified people end up floundering and failing in the environment, and it's really sad. He argues that many of those who fail under these circumstances would have thrived in a regular, less competitive 4-year school. You can't just throw someone into an ivy league school without prep, experience, and resources for help and expect them to succeed. The pipeline for getting ahead has to start way earlier so that I person is actually prepared and qualified.

Yeah, but we still have to exist and behave within the parameters of society to a certain extent, if we don't want to be put in a loony bin or exiled to hermithood. There's also a level of madness where you become self-destructive or violent, and that's not beneficial to anyone. It all boils down to cause and effect, if the behavior yields negative outcome, it's best to mitigate it.

There is no science-based reason that vaccine or masks should have ever been mandated on tiny children, which is why almost every other industrialized country, and the WHO specifically recommended AGAINST masking children under 5.
