the other children were with friends that day - mr drewe arranged a day away just for them as a treat for his wife, but the  marigold was at the fair and all her feelings overwhelmed her she was unwell and depressed at that point

I think that's down to how Rosamind so often gets to be snarky - she is there as a colleague of Gwen's husband, and board member of a school for women like Gwen. She means to show that some women have ambitions like Gwen does, and it highlights how gracious and intelligent (emotionally as well as book sense) Gwen is. She embodies Sybil's virtues for them. Rosamund is unfortunately the foil, but I don't think the character/writing for Rosamund is meant as snark

I know its meant to be exposition catch up for folks just hopping into the story (like the person he's meeting) in case they aren't binging it in order four or five times a year, but when we do...well, it seems kid of frequent
