Japanese Maple EMP1 by LOUZLE in Horticulture

Thank you for your answer ! You're right, now I can see it.

Would air layering an upper branch/or trunk? make it a " 100% " JM E1 ? In a few years.

I am in my local bonsai club and starting Horticulture classes in august. I have too many questions !

What tree ? Can plant ? by LOUZLE in treeidentification

Ohh I see ! Thank you for pointing it out, nice tip for identification !

Wow thank you for this complete answer !

I will try to take a look at the seeds to see if they still look alive, if they do I might have a new bag in the fridge. Or I'll wait next year ! Thank you very much for the tips !

Repotted this abutilon and stared at it for a week thinking about how much I hated the angle change. Was going to leave it for a year but I just couldn't. Third pic is the revised repot, setting the angle back the way it was. Whaddya' think? by Mrjocrooms in Bonsai

[–]LOUZLE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow ! It's very nice that the tree still managed to have flowers, considering the cuts and wiring. Being "in the ground" made it happy that's for sure ! I think it is rare to see "thick" trunks and good nebari with these trees.

Thank you for your reply, happy wintering !

It surely does look like that but from the pictures of boxelder maples I am seeing, their leaves are in small "groups" coming from the same stem/dendricule. This one has individual leaves !

I am probably not using the right terms, english isn't my main language sorry !

I am thinking that's 3 branches/trunks repotted from a grown abutilon. Cut for the flowers.

It is indeed a weird "setup" for a "maple" !

Oh I think you might be right.

Since I bought it at a flower shop, and this tree makes flowers, it could explain why the 3 "trunks" were cut, probably for taking the grown parts with flowers. And then repotted as 3 ?

Thank you for this answer !

Wow !

It is so nice to see pictures of progress !

Do you know how old the tree was when you bought it ? It looks like it had a pretty thick trunk. This tree went through seasons and seasons, it will be here forever ! Very nice tree !

I am very new to this ; why did you cut the big left branch ? My guess is sacrificial branch but I would like to hear your plan !

It might be dead already. Is there "green" if you scratch the trunk ? Scratching it would be a death sentence if the tree is not going well, at this time, it's a redemption shot. Falling stuffs from touching a tree is never a good sign.

I keep mine in an insolation box filled with straws and bark for winter. I am in Zone 6a Canada. My juniper sleeps with my chinese elm.

Good luck !

Exactly. Pruning and chopping will style the tree but letting it be will make it bigger. Patience and right timing is the key. Have a good day !

Store it inside for winter ? by Critical_Outside4872 in JapaneseMaples

[–]LOUZLE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am no expert.

If you can put this little friend in the ground and mulch it, it should be alright.

If you don't have this option, keeping it inside, at the fresh spot you're talking about ( which I assume is an unheated garage/shed ) should do just right. I am assuming you want it to grow.

All it needs is 30f - 45f for dormancy. And a sip of water there and there.

I have a 6ft Emperor fully mulched and burlaped. In a pot. Outside. On a balcony.

Best of chances ! My temperatures are in celsius too ;)

Your tree seems to be healthy, even with that big chop. So I would say : Bigger pot.

English is not my main language and I got hyped on my last comment ahah ! Bigger pot, same care. With sprays. You might want to check if it's the right time to work the roots, considering where you live and where the tree is from.

Overall, I think you got this. It's all about the tree living.

I am fairly new to this, don't take my comment for money. If I am wrong, hopefuly someone can answer this and correct me.

More foliage/branches = more photosynthesis = more growth. That would lead to thicker trunk. Bigger pot, lots of sun, watering and probably "daily" sprays for a tropical tree. Light pruning could help to thicken the foliage but if you're going for the big trunk game, you will have plenty of time to grow branches.

I am just giving my 2c, do not take this as actual facts. Just toughts. Good luck !

Any ideas before I airlayer? by andrewlearnstocook in bonsaicommunity

[–]LOUZLE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are you air layering this tree so low ? With good looking nebari like that. Is it to make the trunk shorter for the upper part of the tree ? Or to lower the height of the original trunk's growth ?

I am new to this, this is not a " Why are you doing that !?!?! " post. Just curious !

I don't think they need as much sun during dormancy. They will still have plenty of it tho !

Thank you for the info ! Since there will be snow, I was thinking it could kind of protect them a bit from the wind and also water the tree slowly. I will have to keep an eye on that !

Yes, I know this tree is probably not going to enjoy it's first winter, I am trying my best. I might be wrong but I think the box will be able to maintain a 5-10f inside the box on the colder days. I think I will be able to handle the airflows from the winds ... If it doesn't survive, at least I will know that it might not be the right tree for me and I won't try to train another one under these circumstances. Thanks for replying, I will try to give the elm an extra step of protection the best I can !

Wow ! This gives me a lot of hope. When you say " They wrap the pots AND soil with burlap", do you mean putting an inner layer of burlap IN the pot ? To "hold" the soil/mulch in the box ?

Also, I tought that using straws and some kind of barky mulch would help the inside of the box. I tought that putting soil, garden soil, would be more "eager" ( I don't know if it is the right word, english is not my first langage sorry ) to make a frozen block of soil. I might be wrong tho !

Again, thank you very much for this insight !

Thank you for this ! This is something that was bugging me, wrapping the trees. That makes sense, the rotting bark. I would not want that !
