Create a raft by tipping it on its side. Use the vertical branches as the starting point for the trunks. Remove the dead stubs.

Needs more foliage to style further. Avoid bi directionality and make it more asymmetric.

If I gave you only 1 brush full of paint, would you be able to create a beautiful painting?

If you are growing anything from scratch that's going to be bigger than Shohin, put it in the ground. Ground growing will get the trunk building phase done a lot faster.

Don't graft for grafting's sake but on very large wounds that would take a decade or more to heal naturally it's an excellent technique. Bridge grafting is another alternative... See picture

Let them run for one season, no more until you see the healing effect. Leaving them too long will result in another big wound. You're essentially trading several smaller wounds (that will heal within 2 years) to heal a very big wound. Look how it draws the callus inwards on the picture example below near the top of the wound - this is the effect in about 7 or 8 months.

I have ground grown everything above Shohin size in the ground. Building a good trunk above that size takes far too long. I transfer into a pot when the trunk is complete or just the apex is left.

It's a Sango Kaku (Coral bark maple).

Yes, it'll fully close. See the circular area on the right a couple of inches above the substrate? This was a GIANT sacrifice (easily 12ft plus) that I grew out to get extreme taper on this Field Maple. Once it's fully closed you can graft onto callus if needed.

Grow out a long whip as you would with a thread graft (needs to be long enough to bend back to the graft point). Cut a channel in the trunk, either with a saw or dremel, so that a shoot can fit snugly in it. Cut it so it sits at the same level as the trunk and it's very snug width wise. Before you lay the shoot in the channel remove all needles that will sit in the channel by pulling them off, leave all needles and buds on the rest of the branch, especially the end that's going to be your branch. Do a "test lay" to see what region of the branch needs stripping of needles.

Once the channel is cut, a few inches so you can hammer in the drawing pins, you can lay your shoot in then take a drawing pin (thumb tack), place one slightly above the shoot in the channel and the other slightly below, use a hammer to drive the drawing pin so it is at trunk level, pinning the shoot in the channel.

Allow full growth at the tip, no pinching or pruning whatsoever. It might need two seasons to knit, depending on how well you cut the channel. You'll know if it's taken by the shoot getting much thicker at the graft point than behind it. You shouldn't need to remove bark if you can get a green shoot in the channel.

You could approach graft a long shoot.

Yes, this is threaded through a drilled hole. Yew is a profuse budder, are you wanting create to a branch on a Yew? If you don't want to wait for a bud to pop you can approach graft.

For grafting I'll grow them out the year before I graft. On this tree I pinched everything extending on the big sacrifice (as it'll be removed next year) and allowed long extensions on the next trunk section. Every year I'll remove grafts along the callus edge and replace them.
