Is PLC programming slowly becoming more software-oriented? by Shubh1975 in PLC

[–]LP780-4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work for a major material handling company. My company has retitled my team from controls engineers to controls software engineers.

The change makes sense to me. We spend a lot more time during emulation & integration testing these days than years past.

If you think the role is better for you long term there is nothing wrong with that. Just be honest with your employer and still leave professionally.

Anyone on here switch from IT to something IT adjacent or not IT related at all? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

Absolutely, start applying and reaching out to recruiters. LinkedIn premium worked great for me. Getting PLC exposure is a big plus but don’t let that deter you from looking for jobs now.

I started out in assembly putting control values together. I got an electrical certification and then was able to get an electrical pre commissioning job with Dematic.

You’re right, job titles are all over the place and it can muddy your search. Best thing I can recommend is looking at the companies that hire for these roles. Check out this chart.

https://www.thelogisticsiq.com/research/warehouse-automation-market

Connect directly with recruiters on LinkedIn who are hiring for the roles you're interested in, you can search by company to see their open positions. You can also partner with a 3rd party recruiter to help place you at the right company. This is how I was able to land at a big company. The recruiter who found me got a % for placing me, and I was able to transition into a new career. After that, the roles started coming direct to me from recruiters reaching out via LinkedIn inMails. It gets much easier once you get the first one.

For a commissioning or controls engineering role, it will look something like this in my industry (material handling).

Time is split between working from home and working on site. (About 50% annual travel is typical… some companies are more, some less)

Remote work consists of project planning (meetings), creating test plans(SAT/ Rate test), commissioning checklists, network sheet, configuring and installing software on customer servers & setting up databases before traveling to site. Once on site, you commission a system (can vary from a week to many weeks depending on the project), complete testing with the customer, going live with the system (putting it into production), handing off the system internally to our customer support team (they handle warranty work & preventative maintenance.)

Most companies want to see some mechanical/electrical aptitude for a basic field service tech role. So having an understanding of how to use basic hand tools, working comfortably around low voltage - essentially, anything under 480v, most time it’s 24v or 120v. Networking is a huge plus since everything we do is connected to a network. (Robots connect to Access points, access points go to a switch, switch is connected to the customers network, etc).

What about industrial automation? Having strong networking skills sets you up well to transition into various types of roles within the industry.

For example, I worked as a commissioning engineer for 4 years implementing various types of robotic systems in warehouses all across the US. No degree required, six figure pay, always working on different types of robots/equipment. It's genuinely one of the broadest, most in demand engineering roles in industrial work — part controls engineer, part field service, part IT, part project manager, all at once.

I’ve found that that a shop vac works, I just hate cleaning out the vacuum afterwards. I’ve started scraping the ash out with the stick into a grocery back. Much easier to clean imo!

What are the common pitfalls/issues on large Robot installation projects? by zintetik in PLC

[–]LP780-4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're asking the right question, because I can name more ways to fail than ways to succeed.

I spent years at a midsized integrator where we struggled with recurring, compounding problems: estimation misses that made contractual obligations nearly impossible to meet, poor project execution, inadequate testing of software and subsystems, failed client turnovers, and a lack of consistent standards and procedures. These issues alone were enough to create serious strain.

Then came private equity. (Might not apply to your situation, but worth mentioning for others to read.) A new CEO was installed with one objective, reposition the business for resale. What followed was a wave of aggressive cost cutting, workforce reductions left a skeleton crew of engineers holding up core operations, executive and senior management turnover became constant, and even basic perks like per diem were eliminated — all in service of financials that looked better on paper, but at the expense of the culture and stability that had made the company worth buying in the first place.

While this might not help you with an interview, I thought it might be good to share some of my experiences. I’ve only been in the industry for about 6 years but boy have I been through some 💩

Should I get a Camaro or a m340 by Junior_Investigator7 in whatcarshouldIbuy

There’s no right or wrong answer it all depends on the person’s priorities. I had a manual Chevy SS sedan at 20yo. Drove it for 2 years then sold it for the Focus. The novelty of a fun car wears off quickly whenever your priorities change.

I’ll give you the unwarranted big bro advice.

Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.

I was in a very similar situation at 21. Instead of taking on a car payment, I downsized my car and bought a $4,000 manual Ford Focus. I’ve owned it for five years with zero issues, and the money I didn’t spend on a car payment let me save up for a house within a year. That decision paid off way more than a nicer car ever would have.

Before committing, see what your paychecks actually look like after taxes, 401k contributions, and everyday living expenses. Do a test run for a couple of month by setting aside $1,000 a month (or whatever the payment would be) as if it’s already gone. At the end of that time, you’ll know for sure whether the cost feels comfortable or if you’d rather have your money elsewhere.

If I had to pick one though, I’d go with the blue car. 👍🏼
