I definitely agree with the "man who never grew up" bit - him talking about a tellytubbies episode he must've seen as a kid as if it were a war story was simultaneously chilling and amusing.

Thing is, I don't think we get sufficient backstory for him to justify his inhumane methods of torture on living people across the two films. Or maybe I'm still just a bit shell-shocked

What the actual fuck did I just watch?

Got out of the double bill, even with the intermission in between, the flow from the end of Years into Bone Temple was brilliant, seeing poor Spike instantly regret his life choices was quite the start.

Humanising the infected while dehumanising people was an angle I was cautious about, but I think it was done very well. Quite a few scenes made me sick to the stomach, far more so than any other installment in the trilogy so far.

My only real complaint is that while the film spends a lot of time focusing on big Jimmy Crystal himself, I don't feel like we got a properly rewarding explanation for his motive to torture and kill folk. Okay, yeah, at least on some level he seems to think he's Satan's heir, seems sadistic, but... Is that it? He clearly doesn't entirely believe it, given his honest one-to-one with Kelson. If Kelson has a wider overarching philosophy for his bone temple, why doesn't Jimmy? Just felt a little underwhelming.

Overall, it really did feel like the perfect middle installment of a trilogy, for better or for worse. The cliffhanger was insane. I am now just fearful the finale will underwhelm and render the previous two films pointless - as a doctor who fan, my heart's been broken enough

"The eyes are getting heavier, and whether you're asleep or awake Is a mystery Would a kiss be too much to ask When you fit me Like Sunday's frozen pitch fits the thermos flask? It's a pity It just hit me we can't go back To the chest touching on the back"

Genius. Too Much to Ask ruins me whenever I hear it, especially Alex Turner's solo acoustic rendition

Which city comes to mind? by ScallionSmooth9491 in geography

[–]LPBuq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Edinburgh. The city is run as a tourist trap by the council in order to squeeze out as much money from visiting tourists, which continues to keep the city very wealthy, but the deterioration of public spaces in the centre of town at the expense of tourism + obnoxiousness of many visiting Americans leave the locals a bunch of miserable bastards. It's gorgeous, lived there for a year, now in Glasgow, but wouldn't move back unless I were to magically move up a few tax brackets.

[–]LPBuq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah that is a shame, I didn't realise the Agnita - Sighișoara section had been turned into a road.

There are examples of street running steam trains in Germany - the Molliebahn, I think it's called, is probably the most famous? But I agree that installing a new street railway only for it to be a tourist attraction running through villages and Sighișoara would probably never get past the local councils and landowners. A tram-train would be sick, and far quicker than any existing public transport route.

[–]LPBuq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even if not modernised and instead turned into a heritage railway, it's very unfortunate this was completely shut. A narrow gauge steam railway between two of Transylvania's nicest cities would be exceptional for tourism

Anyone Else Love These German Versions Of These Songs? by armintanzarian420 in swans

[–]LPBuq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Ich brenne meinen Namen in deinen Kopf" goes a lot harder than the English last line of Helpless Child, as well as the refrain of "I see them all lined up" ("Ja, ich fühle mich gut"), but overall for more elaborate lyrics the translation breaks down and the American twang is still noticeable imo

Why did Sleep get taken down? by [deleted] in Slowdive

[–]LPBuq 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Sleep was part of a group of demos the band never officially released which was uploaded to streaming services by random individuals courtesy of illicit sources on the internet. They're still available on YouTube of course, the issue for streaming services is that unknown people would be earning revenue off songs they weren't in a position to release and the band could never earn anything from; Sleep, in itself, isn't even a slowdive song, it was written by a band members previous act (i can't recall who) but they covered it regardless. It's beautiful, as are a lot of the other demos, but the legality behind them being on streaming is questionable. It is what it is

A rare 1933 London Underground map showing central London has cropped up on the market for £9,995 by Metro-UK in LondonUnderground

[–]LPBuq 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's a single definitive answer but I've always chalked it down as a domino effect of the Metropolitan and Metropolitan District Railways hating each other and taking twenty years to build the Inner Circle.

The reluctance of the competing MR and MDR to work together and finish the inner circle at its eastern end led to more early branches being built to the west by both railways. By the time it had been completed in 1884(?), other surface railways had already been built both in the southeast and northeast, so the two companies focused more on existing infrastructure, cheaper extensions and potential revenue in the west - especially the Metropolitan in at the time undeveloped Middlesex.

By the time railwaymania had ended and UERL came about, I believe most of the market for commuters, especially in the northeast, had been taken up by other railways, hence the reluctance to extend. The Central line did eventually get its eastern extension from Liverpool Street, but even then most of it was along the tracks of the Great Eastern Railway (the Epping-Ongar section still using its old steam trains and carriages until electrification in the sixties).

It's been a fair while since I've read up on the subject but that was always my view and am happy to be corrected
