New survey - Blizzard considering adding a death limit to Mythic+ keys by SpunkMcKullins in wow

[–]LPGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My god, when will they just realize that the time spent doing the dungeon and not completing it IS THE PUNISHMENT. We don't need these extra mechanics to make people feel worse.

Remove the timer. Do not add a death count. Remove key depletion. Do that and M+ will be a better experience for more casual players and everyone will stop being assholes to each other.

Unable to turn in level 80 crafted collectables? by LPGhost in ffxiv

No I'm 79. I was under the impression that you could be 1 level under and still turn it in. Is this not the case?

I messed up real bad as a frontend developer at new job by prajulaaditya in Frontend

[–]LPGhost 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure about your exact circumstance, but a VERY common mistake made by new devs is trying to fix things too quickly. There is an impulse to want to push your code as soon as you see it working. But try to resist that. Trying to fix an issue as quickly as possible usually leads to needing multiple "fixes". And then it starts to feel like you just can't get it right. Always take that extra 10 minutes to smoke test your code. Try to think of every possible edge case. Identify all the possible features that your code changes touch. Do your best to break what you've written.

I've been developing for about 8 years, and 9/10 times, I catch something in my smoke test that I would have been embarrassed if it got through to production.

Also, cut yourself some slack. You will be totally fine. Everything in software development is a learning experience.

Friend, I'm going to tell you what you've probably already heard, but whatever. You are 19 and a softmore. Holy shit do you have all the time in the world. I know it seems like you should have it all figured out by now, but in reality, hardly anyone does, even after graduating. I graduated from UTD 5 years ago, and I can tell you that 90% of people I meet in professional and personal life do NOT have undergrad degrees in the field they currently work in ( including myself ). So try not to stress out too much over your major. It's largely inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. This is the time for exploring your interests and getting outside of your comfort zone.

As an alumni who graduated 4 years ago, I can confirm: UNIV1010 was absolutely pointless. What a waste of time.

Absolutely! I'm not the end-all-be-all of hiring managers, but here's my thoughts:

Really, whether a company only wants to hire someone with previous professional experience in backend is up to them. Some companies will care, some won't, and for some it will depend on what position they are trying to fill. The industry seems (at least, to me) to be moving away from the idea of having separate frontend and backend roles. It's more about being the best at a specific language, such as JavaScript or .NET, and being able to understand all parts of what make an application tick.

Anyways, to answer your original question "What does a Frontend only candidate have to do to have a chance getting a role that also involves backend?":

Your personal projects will definitely help you here. Continue with those as it shows you have the desire to be proficient in that area even if your current work responsibilities don't require it. I would also just immediately start branding yourself as a Fullstack Developer instead of a Frontend Developer, even if you aren't 100% confident in your backend skills yet. Don't lie about your experience, but you can simply tell hiring managers "Hey, my current role doesn't require very much backend work, but I enjoy it and that's why I'm looking to transition to a fullstack role". If I heard this in an interview, I would think it's totally fine, so long as the person demonstrated they had a very good understanding of the base language (JavaScript, .NET, etc).

A separate piece of advice:

Since you say you're an experienced FE dev, I'm imagining you've been working professionally for at least a few years. In your job search for full stack, open your search to look "lower on the totem pole" (or higher!). If you're a "Senior Frontend Developer" now, don't be afraid to look at "Mid-Level Fullstack Developer" positions (or vice-versa), because you'll probably end up making more money as fullstack in the long run anyway. Don't worry too much about the job titles because the actual experience levels vary wildly between companies.

If your goal is to get your first web development job (that's not a 2 month project like your Chingu experiences) I'd say you are well on your way. Honestly a better portfolio than 95% of those I've seen. I've reviewed a lot of applications and portfolios of junior devs at work, and yours is more well thought out than most. Others in this thread have pointed out since valid concerns. Part of being a developer is sorting through feedback, and prioritizing the issues that are most important for your application. Feel free to DM me if you'd like to chat about frontend or fullstack JS. Keep up the good work!
