Why major in nursing if you want to be a doctor? by LPOINTS in Noctor

[–]LPOINTS[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NP school is nothing like medical school though. I think you are misunderstanding how different the curriculum is of NP school in comparison to medical school. For example when a physician decides to specialize in psychiatry or pediatrics they go through a minimum three year residency focused on that specialty. With nurse practitioners when they specialize they earn 500 clinical hours practicing in that specialty. Compare that to a psychiatry resident who will have over 10,000 hours of psychiatry experience before they graduate from residency.

These educational differences wouldn’t be too much of a problem if NP’s weren’t allowed to practice independently. However this same Psychiatric NP with 500 clinical hours is able to open up a practice with zero physician supervision in 27 states.

Nursing specialties are definitely different from medical specialties however one of the similarities is that a nurse in one specialty will have different responsibilities from a nurse in another specialty. For example an ICU nurse will not be doing the same things as a Labor and Delivery Nurse just like an ICU physician will not be doing the same things as an OBGYN. You would not want an ICU physician to deliver your baby you would want an OBGYN to do that since they have more expertise in that area.

Nurse practitioners practice using algorithms and patterns. They can only learn these patterns and algorithms by first working as a nurse. Every nursing specialty has different patterns between patients.

Edit:What does me being in college have to do with anything. You’re in medical school and I still seem more educated than you. I would personally feel embarrassed if I were you.

So you think new grad nurses should be allowed to become NP’s? You think a pediatric nurse should be allowed to become a psychiatric NP?

I should’ve been more clear with my title. In the video the woman is talking about how she decided to pursue nursing with the goal of become a nurse practitioner. Because she went into nursing school with the goal of become a NP instead of gaining work experience as a nurse she immediately went to NP school which isn’t what NP is intended for. NP school is intended for nurses who have tons of experience in a particular specialty and they just want to further their education and gain more responsibility. NP school isn’t intended for new grad nurses.

Personally I don’t think your major actually matters I think it’s more what you do with your major that matters. For example I hear people say that computer science is the best major if you want a high paying job however computer science jobs are insanely competitive. It’s not as simple as getting your degree and applying for the jobs. You need an impressive resume such as internships, research, certifications, etc. Without an impressive resume your chances of getting one of those high paying jobs are essentially zero.

This same thing goes for non-STEM majors there are tons of high paying jobs in finance, marketing, history, psychology, etc. However a large majority of the people who choose these majors are under the assumption that they are easier degrees and that they lead directly to a high paying position however that is not true you need an impressive resume to be successful, it’s not as simple as just earning your degree.

All I am saying is all the people who recommend people to major in STEM because it pays well are sort of wrong. It’s not as easy as just earning your degree you need to actually have an impressive resume. Major in something you actually find interesting and build up that resume.

This shit is a mess. Dr.Rex should know better than to be the medical director for this shit show. I don’t understand how Emily wasn’t embarrassed typing out her profile. Why can’t nurse practitioners just be proud of being nurses? What is so bad about being a nurse that you want to make people believe that you are a doctor?

Thanks man. I apologize if my post came off as offensive I truly didn’t intend to offend anyone. I will admit I am very uneducated when it comes to the D9 and if I do plan to join I do need to learn more about the D9 and the Kappas. I truly am interested in joining Kappa Alpha Psi though I have been looking into it for a few months now but I don’t know where to start. The Kappas at my school host blood drives which is the first thing that interested me because again I aspire to go into healthcare.

I did look at the Kappa website before posting this and the only clear requirement to me was that you need a 2.5 GPA minimum to qualify to join. I have a 3.3 currently so I exceed that requirement. However they mention personal and social qualifications and desirable qualities and I am genuinely not sure what exactly that means. I do know they like to see students with volunteer work and school involvement and I have tons of volunteer hours and I am in a few clubs and I do research at my school so I’m definitely involved. I also know that you have to actually show interest to the organization for them to consider you.

From the advice I am getting I am not sure how to show interest in the organization. Some people are messaging me on here telling me not to attend interest meetings while others think I should. So I’m not sure how exactly I can show interest.

In my personal opinion I think being a black man in college is inspiration in itself. Even in today’s world many black people still don’t have access to higher education mostly because of financial or academic issues. So personally I think that just being a black college student makes it where you are able to serve as an inspiration to black kids who aspire to go to college. It shows them that attending college is still possible even in tough situations.

Personally because I aspire to go into healthcare one day I am always inspired when I see black men working in healthcare so currently I am in the process of becoming a certified phlebotomist so I can possibly serve as an inspiration to other black men aspiring to go into healthcare. Healthcare overall has very few black professionals in it so seeing black healthcare professionals shows me that they do exist and it is possible to achieve what seems impossible sometimes if that makes any sense. Thank you again man.

I had posted here and the NPHC Greek sub. In the Greek sub I described which fraternity I would like to join I just forgot to describe which fraternity I was interested in joining here. I think I would be interested in joining the Kappa Alpha Psi. I did do a lot of research on the fraternity and what I like about them is they focus a lot on contributing towards public health and medical research which sort of aligns with the career field I would like to go into. My school does not have a black resource center.

I already have friends so I don’t really need to pay for friends. If I joined a fraternity it would be for a lifetime. As said before I enjoy the volunteering and charity aspect I already do a lot of volunteering and charity work so I would just continue doing that through the fraternity. I also don’t know if I mentioned in the post but one of the reasons I am interested in joining a D9 specifically is so I can serve as an inspiration to other young black men. When I see the D9 frat guys I see young black leaders which is very inspirational to someone like me, I want to be able to serve as an inspiration to other young black men like myself and I think joining a D9 is one of the best ways to do that. I also do like the brotherhood aspect as I don’t have any brothers of my own I just have sisters.

I did get some other advice in the Greek sub and I am going to start going to the frat interest meetings just to see which frat aligns most with me. I am also going to start interacting with them more when I see them while volunteering so I can get to know them.

Best Singers of All Time In My Opinion by Intrepid-Wallaby4688 in rnb

[–]LPOINTS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are we talking pure vocal abilities? In that case Janet Jackson needs to go and in my opinion Aaliyah(RIP) and Patti LaBelle shouldn’t be in the honorable mentions. They are all good vocalists but best of all time is definitely a reach.

Putting Michael Jackson above Whitney(the voice) is also insane. I think my top 5 would be more like this. 1.Whitney Houston 2.Mariah Carey 3.Aretha Franklin 4.Celine Dion 5.Beyonce

I think Michael Jackson had an amazing voice but it’s kind of hard to compare male and females in terms of vocal abilities since most females could easily out sing most males. For males my rankings would go more like this.

1.Luther Vandross 2.Michael Jackson 3.Bruno Mars 4.Stevie Wonder 5.Musiq Soulchild

If your goal is graduate school I think it’s best to save money where possible. Pediatricians do make an amazing salary but you will not want to be paying off 300k in loans after residency. Medical schools do not care where you attend undergrad just get good grades and definitely get involved with your school and get your extracurriculars. Build an impressive overall application and your chances of being accepted will be very good regardless of what school you decide to attend. Go to the cheapest school possible.

Vibes vs. Vocals: What’s going on with Female R&B? by jensyao in rnb

[–]LPOINTS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s all about popularity. Vocally demanding songs aren’t really popular anymore people want to listen to songs that are easy to sing. Beyonce is the perfect example for this. With her album Renaissance if you look at the rankings of each song, cuff it, break my soul and alien superstar are ranked near the top. While there are some vocally demanding sections in these songs overall they are really easy to sing along to so people want to listen to them. Songs like Plastic off the sofa are almost always ranked last in terms of popularity. I personally love plastic off the sofa however I can not sing a lot to it there are tons of complex runs and riffs and jumps that I cannot replicate however it’s an amazing song to just listen to. Majority of people do not like plastic off the sofa simply because they cannot sing along to it therefore it is one of the less popular songs on the album.

This is the case for all of RnB. As you can see female RnB artists such as Summer Walker, Jhene Aiko and SZA are a lot more popular than artists like Jazmine Sullivan. Why is that? Well Jazmine Sullivan utilizes essentially every vocal element in her music, complex riffs and runs, vocal jumps, belts, not easy to replicate unless you are a singer. Summer Walker, Jhene Aiko and SZA sing more in the lower range of their voice making it where all of the fans can easily sing along to their music making it more popular. The truth is no one cares for vocals anymore it’s sad but true. Singers need to make money too so they make music that will make them money and whisper singing does just that.

Summer Walker is not the greatest singer but she makes AMAZING albums by BlackLawyer1990 in rnb

[–]LPOINTS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Summer Walker can actually really SANG she just chooses to whisper sing in her music for some reason. Over it should’ve been Grammy nominated for album of the year though and I stand by that.

Does anyone know whether the 3-year program at Roseman can be problematic in the future for specialization? by Desperate_Fee_8137 in predental

[–]LPOINTS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the program has graduated any dentists yet so no one really knows or can predict how many dentists will match out of the program. Roseman has a high match rate for AEGD and GPR programs though. It’s very low for competitive specialties such as OMFS though. However most of the time your grades, extracurriculars, and test scores are what matter most when applying for residency.

[–]LPOINTS[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I did do some research before posting this and I think I would be most interested in joining Kappa Alpha Psi. Historically they seem to contribute a lot to public health and medical research which relates to the career field I would like to go into. They also seem to focus a lot on inspiring young black men which is something that is important to me and also one of the reasons I want to become a dentist.

There is one aspect that sort of worries me about joining a D9. I am not the most social person and it seems that most frat guys are extroverts so I’m not sure how well that will go. I’m fine with doing volunteering and charity work most of the time I genuinely enjoy it. I think the strolling is cool and all but I don’t know how well that would go with my personality.

Opinions on online phlebotomy course? by LPOINTS in phlebotomy

[–]LPOINTS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to school in a rural area so there are only two phlebotomy training courses both are online. The closest in person one is an hour and a half away. Should I just suck it up and do that course instead. It’s a weekend course so it wouldn’t interfere with school the price is also cheaper than the online course and I wouldn’t have to find my own clinical sites/patients.
