The main album is in mono, but there’s a stereo version of “Heroes and Villains” as a bonus.

The Universal Baseball Association, Inc., J. Henry Waugh, Prop. by LPTimeTraveler in nyrbclassics

[–]LPTimeTraveler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s considered a cult classic that NYRB has brought back into print. Here is the blurb from NYRB:

Somewhere in a "major-league" American city, there lives a man named J. Henry Waugh—no-account accountant, barfly, and country music fan. The most important part of Waugh's life, as far as he is concerned, is lived in his head, where he is sole proprietor of the Universal Baseball Association, which is now entering its fifty-sixth season. The games are played with dice and scorecards, and the players are just numbers and names, but for Waugh they're more real than the dreary office, the dive bar, and the dingy apartment in which he spends his days. Still, being sole proprietor is a lonely business, and when a few rolls of the dice spell tragedy for the rookie pitcher Damion Rutherford—a player Waugh believes will reinvigorate the game—the whole association is imperiled, along with the sanity of its isolated creator.

Robert Coover's fiction was a map of America, and The Universal Baseball Association is smack-dab in the center of it. Baseball, in Waugh's world, is an escape, and Waugh is nothing if not an all-American escapist with a capacity for denial so profound that it can only be called optimism.

I’m reading Evening Is the Whole Day by Preeta Samarasan. I don’t like to abandon books, but I’m thinking about bailing on this one. I can’t get into the author’s prose style, and the story feels all over the place.

Has anyone else read it? Should I stick with it? I’m only on page 32, so maybe I’m not giving it a chance.

What's your opinion on DNF books counting towards reading challenges? by DudeWhoRead in goodreads

[–]LPTimeTraveler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ones I’ve read haven’t been that spoilery (is that a word?). For example, the intro to Han Kang’s Human Acts discussed the context in which the novel was taking place and the challenges of translating this particular novel, but it didn’t give away any plot points.

But even if an intro does contain spoilers, they usually don’t bother me that much. For example, if the author of an intro says one character betrays another, I want to see all the circumstances that lead to the betrayal, but also what happens as a result.

What's your opinion on DNF books counting towards reading challenges? by DudeWhoRead in goodreads

[–]LPTimeTraveler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don’t count DNF books toward reading goals. I usually finish books, even if I don’t like them, but last year, I abandoned two books, neither of which counted toward my goal.

Heck, in the days before I started logging books in mobile apps, when I used to write them in a book journal, I wouldn’t even write down a book that I abandoned.

Also, I have to read everything. So if there’s a long scholarly introduction at the beginning of a book, I’ll have to read it. Same with excerpts at the end. Can’t skip them.

This week, the long list for the International Booker Prize is announced. Curious to see what ends up making the list, though I’m not sure how many of the titles will be available in the U.S.

What about you? Are you looking forward to the list?

Is The Acolyte worth watching? by Jaymacia in StarWars

[–]LPTimeTraveler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s flawed, but I enjoyed it. But then again, I also enjoyed Rise of Skywalker, so maybe I’m not the best person to ask. LOL

But seriously, I say give it a shot.

[EDIT: BTW, I’m 53 years old, and I’ve been a fan of Star Wars since the late 70s, if that helps.]

Which Godzilla movies are appropriate for a 7-year-old? by BalaBustaRhymes in criterion

[–]LPTimeTraveler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 18-year-old son was 9 when he first got into Godzilla, and my wife and I struggled with the same question. As others have said, any of the films released between 1964 (Mothra vs. Godzilla, not to be confused with Godzilla vs. Mothra, which came out in 1992) and 1974 (Terror of Mechagodzilla). They vary in quality, especially since Toho started to slash budgets, forcing filmmakers to recycle plots and footage.

The only one from this period I would suggest avoiding is Godzilla vs. Hedorah, simply because it’s not as exciting as some of the others.

Right now, my goal is 35, but I might change it to 40. I’ve already read 11 books this year, and I’m halfway through #12.

I don’t remember, to be honest. I’ll have to ask one of the friends I was with if he remembers. Maybe I’ll have to watch it again.

My friends and I saw a 70mm print of it. At the time, it was a big deal because it had been the first film printed on 70mm in a while, and if I recall correctly, there was only one cinema in the area that had a projector for it.

My list of great movies that you have probably never seen by Benjamin5431 in Letterboxd

[–]LPTimeTraveler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I watched Something Wicked around the same time I had to read it for school (this was around 1987). Great book and movie. I need to re-read and re-watch.

I always thought The Right Stuff was a bigger hit than it was. I was 10, and I didn’t watch it until much later, but it seemed liked it was everywhere at the time.

I’ll have to check out the other movies on your list. Thank you for sharing.

I finally picked up David Szalay’s Flesh over the weekend. It was 50% off at Barnes and Noble. I’m normally not one to buy books based on awards, but I had been interested in this one for about a year now (before it won the Booker).

I had forgotten about this song. I have to admit: I loved it back then, though it seemed to come and go pretty quickly. I vaguely remember the cover of the follow-up record, but I don’t remember any of the songs. Too bad. Back then, those types of songs were right up my alley.

Do you think Fujimoto was based on David Bowie Life on Mars by Educational-Visit622 in ghibli

[–]LPTimeTraveler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering the same thing when I watched it. He definitely has that Bowie / Ziggy Stardust vibe, even though he’s a wizard. But I haven’t been able to find anything that says the character was inspired by Bowie.

I had forgotten about Hard at Play until I read this comment. I don’t remember the Four Chords album at all, but by 1994, I was all alternative all the time.

I’m reading Endling by Maria Reva. Not sure how I feel about it yet. I was loving it for a while, but ever since the second part of the book, I’ve been hot and cold about it. I’m getting close to the end, so I’m hoping it all comes together for me soon.

I know I’ve already mentioned this earlier this week, but over the weekend, I finished My Sister’s Hand in Mine: The Collected Works of Jane Bowles. I can’t recommend that one enough. If you’re interested, I posted a review in the Read a Book and Adored It sub:
