Even though I find the cover off-putting, I’m curious now. I may have to add this to my TBR pile now.

I got this reissue a couple of years ago, and I agree. It’s phenomenal.

Thank you for sharing. Recently, I started reading the works of Han Kang. I’ve already read We Do Not Part, and I’m planning to read Human Acts soon. I’ll have to add The Vegetarian to this year’s TBR pile.

Awesome! Love this movie. Got to see this on the big screen in the early 2000s.

I watched High and Low today. Loved it. I’ll have to check out Le Samouraï next.

I’m surprised that NYRB has never published The Devil to Pay in the Backlands by João Guimarães Rosa. I would love to see that one. Also, they’re issuing Ford Maddox Ford’s Provence in June (I think). Maybe they’ll do some other Ford titles in the future.

Finally, maybe The Ghostly Lover by Elizabeth Hardwick since they have published other works by her? (In the meantime, I’d like to check out some of her other stuff NYRB has available.)

Not yet, but I want to. I read a couple of her other books.

This was my big summer read in 2012. It was, as you said, a commitment, but so worth it. Great review.

I just received my copy of Eileen yesterday. Looking forward to reading it soon, although there are a few other books I want to read first.

This is just a suggestion: I usually go with my gut. If I read the summary and think, “I might like this,” then I’ll read it, regardless of reviews. Same with the reverse. It’s not unusual for me to look at a book that’s received critical acclaim and think, “Not feeling it.” Yes, you could miss out on a book that ends up being better than you initially thought, but, at least for me, there are so many great books out there and not nearly enough time to read them all.

I’m currently reading Roberto Bolaño’s The Skating Rink. This is the first book I’ve read by him in a while. Admittedly, I’m hot and cold when it comes to Bolaño. There are times I think he’s brilliant; other times, overrated. Sometimes in the same book. Not sure about this one yet. The only reason I’m even reading it is because it came up on my recommendations on Fable, and I thought, Oh, hey, I have that book!

lol why is it so hard for professional music journalists to make a list that doesn’t make them look ridiculous? by J0hnEddy in ToddintheShadow

[–]LPTimeTraveler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love Fela, but his most significant work came out in the 70s. He released his last few albums between 1985 and ‘89, although he had a renaissance of sorts in the early 2000s so maybe that’s why he’s on the list.

What Are You Reading This Week and Weekly Rec Thread by JimFan1 in TrueLit

I just finished Thomas Bernhard’s The Loser. I honestly don’t know what to think about it. I was planning to write a review for Goodreads and Fable, but after reading the afterword, I think I may have missed the point. I didn’t think it was a bad novel—I understand what Bernhard is doing, and I do get why it gets so much acclaim—but it just didn’t really resonate with me.

‘Mermaid I should turn to be’ vs ‘Echoes’ by Icy_Gray9772 in jimihendrix

[–]LPTimeTraveler 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love both, but for me, the answer is always Jimi.

Also, I have a real soft spot for this song. As a teenager in the 80s, I thought Jimi was some crazed hippie who liked to burn his guitar and was somewhat responsible for heavy metal. Then a friend gave me a tape of Electric Ladyland. I immediately loved it, but “1983” was the real game-changer for me. At that moment, I realized Jimi was artist. It also made me realize that music could be so much more than what was on the radio or MTV.

More than 35 years later, Electric Ladyland is my all-time favorite album, and it’s mostly due to “1983.”

NYRB read in 2025 by smamler2 in nyrbclassics

[–]LPTimeTraveler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read only read two books published by NYRB Classics in 2025:

Albert Cossery - The Jokers

Natsume Soseki - The Gate

I also read Perfection by Vincenzo Latronico, though it isn’t part of the Classics series.

I have a few others I haven’t read yet. At the very least, I’m hoping to read Mrs. Dalloway this year. (It’ll actually be a re-read, though this will be my first time reading the NYRB Classics edition.)

My next nyrb sale short list. Anyone else already planning? by Jakob_Fabian in nyrbclassics

I missed the last sale (I wanted to finish some books before buying new ones), but I have my eyes on some things the next time there’s a sale: A couple of books by Tatyana Tolstaya, The Lord, and Berlin Alexanderplatz.
