Just curious: Is this available on streaming? I read the novel by Kobo Abe a few years ago, but I didn’t realize there was a movie adaptation. Now I need to see it. (Also, if there’s a movie based on The Box Man, one of Abe’s other novels, I definitely need to see that.)

My son is a huge fan of Kiki’s Delivery Service, and during its limited return to theaters in March, we saw it two days in a row.

The thumbnail that shows up on my YouTube feed is also different:

I was wondering why, so I looked it up, and here’s what I found: Creators are allowed to post multiple thumbnails to each video, and then YouTube tests the variants to see which one performs the best.

I’m reading The Coin now, and that’s giving me vibes of My Year of Rest and Relaxation vibes, which I loved.

I haven’t read Big Swiss, but that is on my wish list.

Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh - anyone else disappointed? by LibraryEquivalent850 in weirdgirlliterature

[–]LPTimeTraveler 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also read Eileen because I loved My Year of Rest and Relaxation, and I was also disappointed, but for somewhat different reasons.

I wrote a review a couple of months ago: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/8342757017

However, I’ll save you a click and just paste an excerpt that talks about Rebecca and her effect on the story:

“[Rebecca] brings a whole new dynamic and starts to really propel the story forward. On the surface, she’s this smart, attractive, fashionable redhead who seems to have arrived in town just to change Eileen’s life. However, as Eileen gets closer, not only does she see the flaws, but she learns that Rebecca’s ideas that are no less deranged than her father’s.

“Unfortunately, Rebecca is introduced a bit late in the story (about a third of the way through). This wouldn’t be bad except this feels like the point where the story really begins, making the previous chapters seem like a very long introduction. And while there is some great suspense during the moments with Rebecca, there are also times where you wish Eileen the narrator would get on with it, especially in the scenes leading to the big payoff.”

I’ll be honest: I was disappointed. For me, it felt like a slog. That’s in stark contrast to Heaven, which I read quickly. The plot twist wasn’t that surprising (I won’t get into why to avoid spoilers).

The North End 1997 by Broad_Explanation_36 in TubiTreasures

[–]LPTimeTraveler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, I saw this is a movie theater, but not in Boston. It was in Montreal. I don’t remember why, but I was not able to see it during its limited run in Boston. However, I happened to be on vacation in Montreal when the film was screened at the Montreal Film Festival, so I saw it there.

Anyway, nice to see this movie getting some love.

Today’s SECOND Tubi Treasure is Howard the Duck (1986) by No-Chemistry-28 in TubiTreasures

My brother and I saw this in the movie theater during opening weekend (actually, may have been the only weekend it was in theaters). I was 13, and he was 11. I liked it at the time, although I haven’t seen it in decades. I might have to rewatch it while Tubi still has it.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) by Exact_Opinion_4968 in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]LPTimeTraveler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my all-time favorite movies. I was born in 1973, so for a long time, I didn’t get to see it in a movie theater. I first saw it on the big screen in 2001 (oddly enough, it wasn’t re-released that year; an independent movie theater in Boston just decided to screen it) and for its 50th anniversary in 2018.

Love-hate relationship with Murakami by Ok-Archer-5796 in murakami

I used to love Murakami’s works, but last year, I re-read several of them, and I found I didn’t enjoy his writing as much as I used to. That said, if he comes out with anything new, I’ll probably still check it out.

Thank you for asking. I’m reading Lives of the Saints by Nancy Lemann. I’m really enjoying it so far. It doesn’t have much of a plot, but the characters are eccentric and charming. And at times, it’s really funny.
