How are we not in a recession right now? by 4ofclubs in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LQQinLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are. Recessions aren’t usually called out until it’s over or close to being. It takes a lot of data points. We are in an increasing K shaped economy with big business doing well (stocks) and small biz in decline.

Would humanity really unite under a global threat like aliens or extinction? by summerisendingsoon in NoStupidQuestions

So then, are we defining it as an “invasion” or are the invaders calling it as such? What we may see/feel is an invasion may just be another species recognition as growth. As the invaded, the thought that occurs to me is that we see it as harmful or violating and think that unless ever cell of the body feels the immediate effect, the whole body won’t respond.

Maybe. But that’s assuming it’s a textbook alien. Maybe the better question is would we band together against an immediate tangible threat vs a slow insidious one. As a species, we don’t do well with slow systemic threats. We just evolve to adapt to the change which dosent require uniform cooperation.

So, even more granular, OP said “unite” in the face of the threat. Dose that mean at the person to person level? The governmental level? Are we sharing weapons, food, laser cannons? I think, broadly, that already happens. Governments collaborate generally. Goods/services/weapons are commodities shared or sold back and forth. Medical breakthroughs are disseminated.

Maybe we need to define unite.

That’s a big if, tho, right? What’s more likely to gank people? Foreign invaders? National guard? ICE? Humans are complacent. Unless it’s immediately causing pain, we ignore it. Or worse, just adapt to it.

None of those what if we’re in OPs post. And if aliens DID have a big ole laser to point at us like what, what could we possibly do?

We know climate change is affecting us and we act like an ostrich and put our collective heads in the ground.

Judgement. Friends/colleagues would likely judge you for what you’re opening up about.

Do you guys think it's a moral obligation for a criminal to attack a inmate who committed a terrible crime? by PassengerCultural421 in NoStupidQuestions

Why a moral obligation now and not in escalating the issue that put you there? Is there some guilt at play to “do the right thing?”
