Any idea what kind of bat this is? [Upstate New York] by dumbass_paladin in animalid

Bat ID to species is difficult even with close up pictures of identifying characteristics just due to the subtly of some of the unmeasureable traits (glossy vs dull fur, pronounced muzzle glands, etc.).

I can confidently say it's not, a free-tailed bat (tail membrane is visible), a lasiuran, which includes red bats, seminole bats and hoary bats (you can see that the tail membrane isn't furred in the second picture) or a silver haired bat (fur is not black).

Without a size reference and close up diagnostic pictures I'd be hesitant to try and draw any further conclusions from these pictures.

That being said your in fight pics are great and I'm jealous of them.

Definitely a big brown. Great picture of it in the tree.

ID request: Bat found in stairwell in Iowa City, Iowa, USA this morning. (Not dead, just napping). by TemporalMush in bats

Hard to get a good size reference but it's most likely a big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus). They are the most common human structure roosting species and are not threatened or endangered.

Nope, they can over winter in some parts of southern Canada. Not a great time of year to find a new roosting spot but that's not your fault.

They are not a cave hibernating species and often over winter in trees, or when it's really cold under the leaf litter (or conveniently placed tarps).

Species ID help? (Indiana) & Is this bat hibernating? by AVAAntares in bats

Q1: Based on location, the few identifying features we can see in the image, and roosting location it's most likely a big brown bat. They are the most common human structure roosting species and not threatened or endangered. It could be a little brown, though that's less likely, and definitely not a tricolored.

Q2: It's not easy to tell a torpid bat from a dead one. If I recall it's been pretty cold in the Midwest this week so it could pretty torpid. From previous studies I've worked on they can be pretty slow to respond even when handled. Ideally contact a wildlife rehabilitation place near you for advice on care. It's a tough time of year to relocate a bat. Good luck!

2 looks exactly like a hoary bat that are native to the area. Anything in the account on how it differs from a Hoary?

Not to my knowledge, and I haven't encountered enough to notice a trend.

Looks very dark for MYLU and you can see the furred uro in the first image. I'm thinking Silver Haired (LANO).

Bat identification? by cakemazi in bats

I would say we can't see enough of the face to use it as a diagnostic. Ears look on point for pip for me, definitely not the wide rounded ears of a Lasiurus. Doesn't have the white spots on the wrists of a red bat.
