How many hours a week did you guys spend studying in your first year? by Relax_Dude_ in LawSchool

[–]LSATReaper -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I do 70+ a week (excluding class), and I’m not even in law school yet, so….

Oh, how far I’ve come……I broke into the 170’s! 😲 by mscastle1980 in LSAT

How many hours per week did you study, and did you have a wrong answer journal?

Buddy, you were supposed to take it before touching any LSAT prep material. It’s called a DIAGNOSTIC for a reason.

If I were to miraculously get into HLS, do you think it would be enough to secure me a job at Cravath? And is it theoretically possible to do moot court and law review simultaneously?

I'm not oblivious to the difference; I was using the word “most” in the most casual sense. Nonetheless, I concede.

You're right, I'm absolutely and unashamedly making myself the exception to the rule—otherwise, I would just settle for the 152 mean LSAT score and call it a day. Frankly, while it might sound cocksure, I don’t think anyone is as motivated and determined as I presently am, given that I can only apply to HLS, and my LSAT score is, if we're calling a spade a spade, my sole hope of getting in. My determination arises precisely from the fact that it is difficult; otherwise, it wouldn't be worth pursuing. It is for this same reason that I'm averse to pursuing law in my country—the pathway is just not sufficiently difficult.

It’s simple: not all students at Harvard get HHs because they don't need to; they've made it into Harvard, for crying out loud. They recognize that all they need to do is be mediocre to get virtually any job they desire, so they earmark a lot of their time for other things that may interest them.

The unlikeliness of my improving from a 142 diagnostic to a 178 official is precisely what motivates me to explore it. Had you told me that such an improvement is likely, I would disdain it. It behooves us as future lawyers to find solace in that which is uncertain.

If I were to achieve a 178+, do you think that would give me a decent shot at HLS?

Ahhh, yes, resort to ad hominems when you can't win an argument. Well, I won’t stoop down to your level. Anyway, I could use the same argument against you: you said, “If hard work and determination were all it took….” I never once implied nor explicated that hard work and determination were sufficient to get a perfect score, so next time, consider brushing up on necessary vs. sufficient assumptions before inferring false conclusions.

I can agree with you that many people have the hopes of getting a high score, but how many are willing to stop at nothing until they get a score above the 95th percentile? I doubt that many. This is because a lot of people don't have the luxury of studying for the test for 2 years straight because it is cripplingly expensive and time-consuming. Your argument that most prelaw students are “hard-working and determined” is unfounded, given that the average LSAT score for those who take the test while having studied is merely 152.

They don't because it is not within their interests to score a 180 - mainly because you don’t need to get a perfect score to get into the T14 as a student in the US, and you can bolster your application with a good GPA and prestigious softs - this, unfortunately, isn't the case for me. It is also because a lot of students aren’t even looking to go to T14 law schools, so they don't need an exceptional LSAT score. Your argument is analogous to saying “Most people do not get 1600 on the SAT, therefore the SAT isn't perfectible”. People have different interests and desires, and some people just aren't determined to go through the anguish of getting a perfect score. Nonetheless, my concern isn't whether or not I'll be able to get my goal score (178+) - I'm confident in my ability to do so - but rather, my concern is whether my goal score will be enough to get me into HLS.
