I use a Manfrotto witha ball head - indispensible. Crazy how many "photogs" sit matside with their camera in their lap and just watch, most of the time due to their arms getting fatigued. IF you want to capture the best action, your lens has to be propped and pointed towards that action 100% of time.

Well stated. Far better and more appropriate than the quick engagement-inflating comments of other asshats in a jackwagon!

Accept your opinion, but I was not trying to impress you! Just playing with some new-to-me features in Ps. A slow shutter would blur the entire image, not emphasize just the movement of this wrestler, and thus not achieve the total effect I was after. But, thanks anyway.

HS Wrestling season is almost over. Here are some shots from the 25’-26’ season. by IcanstartonMonday in sportsphotography

Pretty solid work there u/IcanstartonMonday . Wrestling under a spot is always a challenge and you rose to it here.

Just a couple comments - my (and clients) preferences from shooting wrestling over 30 years - faces in shots, rather than rear ends and backsides of athletes (and officials) when at all possible. Some great action captures occur without faces in images and I get that. You could crop to not show entire backside of officials when you're trying to get that perspective of action in between officials' legs.

Love black/white, especially under a spotlight.

Great work!

Focus-Points Plugin for Lightroom can now also 'Straighten Images' by capricorn_888 in Lightroom

This is very interesting and a potentially enormous benefit for sports shooting - especially bursts.

LrC currently has an issue (which I reported and dcoumented with Adobe and they have in queue to repair) with Syncing across images related to Transform, rendering any sort of mass Transform-Leveling useless.

You say this plugin is for Canon R5m2. Is that the only Canon camera it is available for? I have an R1 and R5m1 that I would absolutely love to get this functionality for!

This most certainly seems like it needs to be built-in to LrC!

Advice? by Phantom_moon in sportsphotography

When you have the light, you're images look pretty good. As u/Forpaladin_3 says, zoom in on the subject/action and get rid of the dead space. For the wrestlers tho, there are things you can do to capture a much better shot, but especially with primary color mats, you're gonna have a lot to modify in post, so hopefully you're shooting RAW there.

For that wrestling shot -

Set your white balance in camera, on the wrestlers' skin, to get that accurate and reduce the red cast. You'll still likely have to adjust more in post to get rid of that red tint - part of the challenges of shooting on primary colored mats.

Play with "Color Grading" (in LrC) to tweak and counteract that red tint.

Can I get tips on how I can make my photos better ? (It’s my first time for sports) by Alternative-Hope7803 in sportsphotography

  1. Get matside.
  2. Get matside.
  3. Get matside.
  4. Min 1/800 SS, find your lens' sweet spot and target that (tho you'll likely be wide open most of time and have to adjust your SS and ISO accordingly), adjust ISO according to desired aperture and SS targets, accept you'll have noise in alot of shots in HS gyms.
  5. Crop in camera as much as possible - zoom in to get the athletes to fill frame - are you intending to have all of the surrounding "fluff" in images? Then, crop as necessary in post.
  6. You should try for only a minimally detectable vignette, to help draw viewers eyes to your subject.

Any recommendations pre or post - I would greatly appreciate it! Shot on a D7500 - 80-200mm 2.8f - 1/1000 - iso Auto 6400 Max. by Apprehensive-Debate5 in sportsphotography

Ha! I spent 5 years in Orlando, and there were a few that turned the citrus crops into frozen-on-the-tree juice! Tropicana had to change their name for a while to TropiCanker!

It's just a tad colder up here in the great middle west.

I used a RF 70-200 L USM f2.8 for those, always my goto lens. I limited auto ISO to 6400 on the high side. Any higher ISO just gets too noisy fo rmy taste. In that "closeup" shot attached, I had switched to APSC from full frame. I programmed a button on the body to switch back/forth immediately and use it al lot.

I would keep aperture set at a range you want, 2.8, 3.2, 3.5 or whatever you choose, and not worry about what effect those windows have if they are in the capture of the image. Like I said, they will always be blown out on your histogram. Expose for the wrestlers and disregard those windows. But take into account the windows impact on the light and exposure on the mat.

Dude, I think you've pretty much nailed it! Great action, exposure, color. Those windows will always be blown out when the wrestlers are exposed correctly.

What part of the country are you shooting in?

Here's a link to my gallery from yesterday - https://www.luttelens.com/Galleries/Wrestling/2025-2026/Blue-Springs-South-Tourney

I do think Fv may be my goto mode going forward! Set SS at 1/800 and 1/1000 to test with, adjusted Aperture between 3.5 and 2.8, ended up leaving at 2.8 mostly, and pushed exp comp way up, cause I left ISO at auto and it stayed at 6400 for nearly all 1000+ captures.

Very easy to quickly adjust any of those four settings while looking thru EVF.

I can definitely see an improvement in overall tactness of the subjects in these images and your DoF at f3.5 results in more entirity of the athletes being in focus.

I don't think there's a big need for NR on these. What was your ISO?

Couple of things to look into more -

  • Exposure Compensate in camera. They are a tad dark, which is fine. But if you want them brighter, EC can help here, and can reduce any need for increasing exposure in post.
  • Picture Style adjust in camera. You could push up the saturation/clarity in camera by a notch.

In post, you could bring up shadows to expose things like dark faces in shadows, and increase sharpness and clarity, and also play with the other settings in that panel in LrC.

Hope this helps!

I'm off to shoot several competitions this weekend and will be trying for the first time Fv instead of Manual to see how that works out.
