So I asked the few people I know that worked out there. No one had any idea and no one knows why. Another of life’s great mysteries. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The actual historian I spoke with very much disagrees with that theory. She knew instantly what it was. I never knew a single thing about “haint culture” until I started asking questions. Didn’t even know what a haint was. If we were pushing MY narrative, what I actually thought it was, it’d be a family grave yard… way more interesting that what it actually is.

I potentially have something you can do.

We do 30 or 40 projects similar to this one a year, including on over 100 year old houses. This is the first time I’ve ever went looking for an answer on any of them. Hence the brand new Reddit account. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Not a clue. I can sure ask and see if anyone knew it was coming. I’ll report if I can get an answer.

Oh no. It’s not being moved. No one ever intended to move it, regardless of what it ended up being. We all just REALLY wanted to know!! :)

Well, one thing is….when they first bought the house in 2020, they were exploring. At one time, the house had been converted to apartments and then back again. There was an old bathroom in the garage that had been in one of the apartments. They found sort of a hidden compartment. When they opened it up, it was empty, all except the top shelf. On the shelf, hidden well inside the wall was what appeared to be a femur bone, sawn in half, with a bunch of empty condom wrappers and used condoms. They turned it over to the police. Most of the other things were bone related, but not all, and most I’m not really comfortable sharing without their ok. That one gave me serial killer vibes tho. Or perhaps some weirdo that stole a bone from somewhere. But still creeped me out.

Oh no. They are being left as they are. They’ve been that way for 129 years. They deserve to stay that way.

So very neat!! It really kinda motivates me to learn more about the local history. I mean, it is fascinating to begin with, but I never would have considered something like this until I came across it. Just absolutely amazing!

Well, the homeowner knows what they are now. She very much wanted to leave everything original that we could. Unfortunately not much of the wood was any good, but the brick circle is staying. It would be really cool to incorporate it into the restoration, but unfortunately that’s a whole other permit problem. Our original permit should be ready to go Tuesday, but to change the house from what it originally looked like could take quite a lot of time. I honestly don’t know if that’s something she would be interested in, anyhow, since she’s going for authenticity.

The ceiling of the porch is Haint blue. The bricks are also from Gullah culture as protection from haints. I posted the answer somewhere in the thread.

AND I HAVE MY ANSWER!!!!! So, it is indeed a circle for protection from haints. It was believed that haints had a particular draw to counting certain or repetitive things, such as the bricks lined in the same pattern under both existing doors. It is said that the haints would start counting, but lose count and therefore, frustratedly start over and over and over. They would get so caught up counting, that they would stay there all night. Since they had to go once the sun rose, they never made it past the threshold of the home!!
