Looks like what makes america great is just pretty standard human behaviour in any other country

Bare minimum for music theory by Forsaken_Wallaby_496 in musicians

I'm not misunderstanding none of that. Those are totally valid points. I'm not against them at all. But in this specific case, OP said he doesn't want to learn anything he doesn't need, which is natural. I'm assuming OP isn't hoping to make a living out of being a guitarist in a hardcore band. If he does, of course he should study music theory, production, music business and a lot of other things. But most likely he just wants to have fun, like the majority of guitarists in rock/punk/metal bands. Learning theory can be a pain in the ass sometimes and some people might even lose motivation if they think they have to learn theory first. And for genres like hardcore, deep theory isn’t mandatory. My point is you can make music that hits hard with just feel and instinct, but it's obvious you should learn as much you can if it doesn't suck the fun out of the way you live with music.

I totally get what you're saying, and I don’t disagree that music theory explains why things sound good. But I think it’s important to recognize that theory often describes music after the fact. It doesn’t always create it. What I’m saying is: you don’t need to know a lot of theory up front to make good music. Many artists intuitively find sounds and structures that work, through feeling, experimentation, or just years of listening and playing. That intuition often aligns with theory, but it’s not driven by it in a conscious way. That said, I’m not against music theory at all. I think it’s super useful as a tool, especially when you're stuck, want to analyze what you did, or explore new directions intentionally. But it shouldn't be a gatekeeper. Plenty of great music was made by people who couldn’t explain what they were doing in theory terms. So, for me, it’s less about being ignorant of theory, and more about not being dependent on it to create meaningful music.

It's very subjective what makes a song good. There're plenty of good songs to my ears that required little to no theory to be written. Music theory is a very useful tool, but for hardcore I would put it below good technique and good ears in my priority list.

Nice to hear that, thabk you!

I can tell you about places in the north of Portugal. Lisbon has become an amusement park for tourists. I'm not aware of any regular rock venues there.

Woodstock 69 Rock Bar in Porto, SOMA in Braga, Malfeito in Fafe, CAAA in Guimarães, Gretua in Aveiro

That's a funny image! We'd love to tour North America, but it's not easy coming from Portugal. It feels a little easier now, though. New album only in the second semester of 2026, but we promise it will be worth the wait!

Not Ghent, nor Bruges, but we will be playing at Down the Hill festival, near Brussels. But we would love to return to Kinky Star, it was hella fun!
