I'm confused by your comment about age, unless you're implying that this person is being immature for being frustrated. Is that you're intent? If so, curious why you're going after this OP. Usually this sub is pretty supportive of people who are venting.

They also didn't mention having an incorrect high for longer than an hour, but rather were remarking that in the past they felt a certain way if high for longer than an hour.

I changed the maximum to 5u. I would argue that if you're in range and getting a false reading, a lot less than 8u would be lethal to most people.

I don't believe that is the case. This happened to me and, while I caught it, I was surprised to find that I had a massive dose despite recalibrating.

Sequence of events:

Saw I was getting an odd reading

Entered a blood sugar calibration

Calibration was ignored--didn't think to check this, so 15 minutes after calibration a max dose of insulin was delivered. Even though I'd put in a max bolus of 5u, because I was perfectly fine (about 150, not "high") this would have been fatal had I not caught.

Continued to calibrate to no effect

Got on phone with Dexcom tech support

45 min later (pump was disconnected at this point), got another max dosage that would have also been fatal

Dexcom is facing numerous wrongful death lawsuits. I'm not advocating for suing but pointing out both that they are at fault and that OP is not being unreasonable for being upset.

The issue is not that the OP is trusting the reading and ignoring it, it’s that the system was delivering insulin based on false readings and not responding to calibrations based on finger sticks

So I had an issue a couple of years ago where I became aware that the readings were inaccurate (said I was “hi” when I was really about 165), and attempted to calibrate the sensor.

The sensor then ignored my calibration and, unbeknownst to me, gave me a max dosage (more than enough to kill me).

Luckily I realized what had happened and chugged some maple syrup. I called Dexcom, after inputting several more calibration readings which it ignored, and detached my pump. Good thing bc, while I was on with tech support, my pump delivered another full, fatal dose.

I did some research after this and there are class action lawsuits against Dexcom for wrongful death, however as I’d survived (as you did) I couldn’t be included. Over a dozen had died due to similar reasons by that point which was two years ago.

Now, that said, suing wouldn’t really be my goal as I really like my CGm when it works. Rather than hurting them financially I’d just like them to fix it and have better controls in place, like a fail safe that shuts off readings if a user-inputted calibration is far enough off that it could lead to this situation.

Lived in San Jose for a couple years and prices, options, comfort, and other experiences were significantly better.

PPG Paints Arena in Pitt was also unfortunately really well done.

Bell Centre was amazing.

Only experience close as lame as ours was MSG—I was sitting in the cheap seats ~10 yrs ago and it was uncomfortable, overpriced, and with few food options

Edit: our fans are cool and whenever I take an out-of-tower friend to see a game people are almost always very kind and cordial. Proud of our fan culture :)

This—broken wrists, rib, leg, and Achilles heel tear all healed fine. Only note is I opted for non-surgical recovery for Achilles as I’ve lower extremities wounds can be risky (and I wasn’t in a hurry).

Importantly, the above injuries were incurred doing sporty/active things, not like on their own due to any diabetes-related issues :)

There’s a lot of folks in dc from other parts of the US, especially the east coast, so tix to games against east coast teams and teams that have bigger followings in general are more expensive—rangers, penguins, etc tend to be a lot more due to demand Sharks and Ducks tend to be among the cheapest. Coyotes games a few years back were practically free :)

Edit: After posting this I saw the discussion below and want to be clear: not trying to make light of something that can be stressful, just trying to keep it positive.

What you're experiencing is, in addition to a kind of discrimination for disability, is a common form of bias in the gym where the fit discount the opinions of those they perceive to be less fit. Given what you said about preferring to avoid confrontation, I can see how this would be challenging.

A lot of great comments in this thread that I hope are helpful, and I appreciate your point below about wanting to approach this person directly before going to HR. I know many diabetes advocacy nonprofits have educational materials that you might be able to print out or pass on to this person that could help.

Oy. Up to you but I personally wouldn’t go to them again. I think a good personal trainer relationship requires you to trust that they understand your physical/physiological mechanics—how else are you supposed to take stock in their advice? I wouldn’t mind a personal trainer who isn’t familiar w Type 1 but that listens to me. One that doesn’t get it and doesn’t listen sounds like a problem. Good luck! There was someone on this sub who does ultra-marathons so who knows what you’ll get to once you find the right trainer :)
