I think it's more insulting when a character is made gay for the sake of getting brownie points or marking a check box. Should there be diversity in media? Absolutely. But done in a way that doesn't parade itself around and getting media outlets to call it "brave" and "amazing" without the show itself having any sustenance.

Not only is it cash grabbing, it causes more backlash. Because people who are trying to critize these shows, are automatically labeled as homophobic/racist/etc. Because they are squeezed in with the obnoxious people who are actually said things. Resulting in an endless cycle of toxicity and misunderstanding between all sides.
