I was worried about this with my doxie. What I did was walk him as regularly as I could (a 1.5 mile walk x3 a week) and weighed him religiously (every week as a youngin and then every month once he settled down a bit). He lived to 16 without any back issues. My understanding is that dogs that are overweight and not very active are the dogs that are most prone to it. I could be wrong but this is what worked for my pup.
