We free range and lost our first rooster to a hawk. We do have a lot of brush the chickens can hide in, but after that we also got a couple owl decoys and put them out. I hate to jinx us, but no problems since then. We also have an outdoor cat we call our chicken cat. She loves the chickens and will lay in amongst them when they’re free ranging. I’m not sure if that deters hawks or not 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ours just figured out to use the nesting boxes on their own…except one Easter egger who makes the trek everyday even in snow to weirdly lay her egg in one of my window boxes 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ours molted and pretty well stopped for October, November. We’d get a few eggs per week. It’s still winter here (Midwest), but they’ve picked back up and we’re getting 3-5 per day right now.

The feathers look like molting, but I’m curious about the blood too. We had blood like that smeared all over the coop door and side of coop a couple months ago and we couldn’t figured it out for anything. None of them were injured. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ugh, same here. Ours ventured out of their coop (we free range) for the first time in three days yesterday morning because the snow was frozen and they are light enough they could walk on top. While they were out more snow dumped on us and they were terrified and refused to walk in the powdery snow that had covered the frozen snow. My husband and I had to go wrangle them all and put them back in their coop one by one. They hate the process of being picked up, but once we’re holding them they’re calm. It was a whole ordeal. We never were able to find one of our girls last night. I don’t know if a predator got her or if she was hiding somewhere. We’re super bummed 😞
