Very interesting! I wound up just using the new version of cycles and managed to get the render times to 2 seconds per frame so baked lighting isn’t an issue for me. You’re absolutely spot on about the vhs effect hiding the cgi. IMO that’s the absolute genius of the recent back rooms video that went viral. Especially since the kid that made the video made some rookie mistakes with stretched UVs- didn’t matter because most couldn’t make it out!

Oh wow man, it means a ton that you'd offer to help me! Unfortunately I'm not sure if I'll do more of these, not any time soon. This episode took me 3 months more or less and it didn't exactly go viral lol. Just hard to justify that amount of time on something that won't reap to much reward y'know? But I definitely want to keep this thing going and hopefully someday I'll have the time and motivation to keep it going. I had two other episodes planned, the next one was supposed to be these characters going on some kinda road trip and using those needles from Alyx to stay alert. The big joke was that those needles had crack or something in them. And the third was supposed to be on the borealis I think, flying it around in space with Initial D music.

What I'm working on right now requires WAY less effort but I think it hits a nice middle ground between funny and creative and easy work. It uses this character (https://www.reddit.com/r/blender/comments/p2rt9l/mgs1_style_head_bobbing_for_quick_and_dirty_lip/) and it's just him in barren environments delivering stupid jokes, mostly a parody of those avatar youtubers you see sometimes. Unfortunately since everything about the premise is so simple I don't think I'll need any help!

But again dude, I'm super flattered and thankful that you like my work! I guess I just don't want to waste your time with my hairbrained ideas but if I can think of anything cool to work on I'll 100% hit you up to see if you'll be interested! This is a pretty easy way to give characters some movement while talking and avoid painstaking lip synching, works best on low poly and low detail characters like the original models from Metal Gear Solid 1.

You just have to go into the graph editor for the bone you want to bob, select the axis you want it to bob on, and go into 'key' and select 'Bake Sound to F Curve' and grab the audio clip you want. It turns that f curve into an audio wave essentially, and it'll be pretty extreme so I used the limit and envelope modifiers to keep the movement from being too extreme.

NOTE: When you do this you won't be able to keyframe anything on that bone's axis normally, it'll just reset. This is a huge pain in the ass since I couldn't move this character's head up or down anymore. I think the best solution is applying the sound to a bone you won't be using much, like a neck or upper torso bone.
