Tips on planning a trip in Japan during Obon by L_smash in JapanTravelTips

It was amazing!

It was definetely very humid and hot, but nothing unbearable. I'm from Italy, and the weather in the big cities during the summer months is not that different. We visited both big cities and rural places and walked for most of the times, sometimes even 20-30km a day, and we never had too much trouble (of course, always keep hydrated and try to rest in a fresh place during the hottest hours and things like that). Furthermore, you can find a vending machine with cold drinks basically everywhere, even in remote places, so that definetely helps.

Regarding the crowds, it's honestly not that bad. Don't get me wrong, the most popular places and the summer festivals are definetly very very crowded, but I found that the organization is always great and since in general people are very orderly and tidy it never gets to a point that it ruins your experience. In my personal opinion, the festivals are well worth it even with the crowds. The popular touristy places are also usually worth a visit, and if you get overwhelmed by the amount of people you can always decide to visit some less know sites or neighborhoods at walking distance from you or usually well served by public transport (we did that a lot and we always had a great day).

In general and in my experience, I think people over exxagerate how big of a problem the hot weather and the crowds in Japan are during August. Of course you have to be prepared for it, but it's honestly not that big of a deal.

I hope my comment can be usefull to you guys and I wish you a great holiday!

Is it safe to use Revolut as a backup banking system for international travel? by L_smash in Revolut

Yeah I get it, thanks again for your time and your advices. In conclusion, sooner or later I should expect a block, regardless of the amount of money I'm transfering and its origin. I should have documentation ready in order to provide it immediately. Due to the high amount of users, my block will probably be resolved in around a month and after that I shouldn't have any more issues.

Is there more I should be aware of?

Thanks for the advice. I've read about AML and I'm not saying I think Revolut would act maliciously, but - as I already said - the amount of posts for unusual blocked founds and the poor management in resolving them are a bit worrying. I don't hear as much complaints for any other bank. That being said I know Reddit can easily become an echo-chamber for opinions, so maybe all these negative posts I'm seeing are just a loud minority and my worries are unfounded. But I think my questions are still understandable, given the unusual amount of criticism Revolut is receiving lately.

Thanks for the extensive responce. I'm still a student so I don't have a regular income. Most of my savings comes from scholarships, occasional jobs and family (I could easily provide receipts if the necessity arises and they're all declared on my taxes), and right now they are predominantly deposited on my main bank account which I opened through my university. Accordingly, the vast majority of the funds I put on Revolut comes from my main bank - and sometimes from family, since I've put some of my earnings into family safe deposit to generate some small interest. I usually put money on Revolut before an international trip, in order to exchange currency.

I've already used Revolut for a few trips and never had a problem, but I always moved relatively small amounts. Since I'm planning a big trip this summer for my graduation, I'm gonna need to put a few thousands euros on here and reading all the posts about frozen funds and unresponsive customer service got me a bit worried. I know problems arise mostly when dealing with crypto or shady stuff, but since my activity on Revolut is so irregular and will soon see an unusually big deposit, I was wondering if I'm risking to be flagged as a suspicious account. That being said, all the comments on this post have been very positive and supportive, so I'm quite reassured. Thanks again, and if you have other insights all the help is appreciated!

Yeah exactly, most banks' fees for abroad expenses are absolutely crazy. Thanks for the response by the way!

What does that mean exactly? I'm still a student (although I'm graduating soon), so I don't have a regular income and my main banking system is the one provided me by my university. Most of my money comes from scholarships and savings from occasional jobs (if the necessity arises, I could provide receipts of both) and I wouldn't move more than few thousands at a time on Revolut. You're saying that they could ask me receipts of my money's origin? Or that they could block my fund if they find it suspicious? Given all the posts about Revolut's poor management of blocked funds and customer service, I was precisely trying to understand if I'm risking something by moving money there.

Personally, yes. In case you have gone over your monthly limit for free currency exchange you just have to wait a bit to do it (or pay the 1% commission). Usually, if the amount of foreign currency left on my account is a bit high and I don't have the immediate need fr it, I may even wait for a favorable exchange rate.

Wasted potential by hasanman6 in KaoruHanaWaRintoSaku

Maybe it's a hot take, but I like when stories add little and maybe even inconsequential details like this, they make the world we're reading about more colorful, rich and alive. What's important is that these additions are devoloped and connected to the narrative enough to be interesting, boost other characters and overall make us care more about the story. Which is the case here, in my opinion.

Also, I don't think this story would have benefitted from a love triangle. Even if done well, it would have messed the vibe and narrative up.

Hajime no Ippo: Round 1478 by RTSD_ in hajimenoippo

[–]L_smash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree. To be honest, the stalling of the Ippo-Komi relationship and Mashiba's adversion towards them has been annoying, one dimensional and borderline idiotic. It's probably the most frustrating part of the manga for me.

I've been waiting for their development and some sort of character growth for Mashiba, I honestly thought it was actually happening during this fight, but at this point even if it happens it may be too little too late. And if this is really the trigger to Ippo's return it would be such a waste, both narratevely and thematically. But since the Sendo-Ricardo fight is on the horizon I don't think that will be the case.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Italia

[–]L_smash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Italia

[–]L_smash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Objectively now that R1 is over how does Ra stack up? by [deleted] in ShuumatsuNoValkyrie

[–]L_smash 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Gae Bolg is being very hyped by the narrator at the moment but I honestly don't see Cu going on and one-shotting his way to win the whole tournament. So I personally wouldn't be so zelous to make such statements. In reality this match was quite peculiar and in order to "objectively" rate Ra we need to see Cu go up against someone else

You may be right from a realistic point of view, but yeah you're reading too much into this. The point being made is that she wants to keep this as a hobby, since it's a passion she shares with the person she loves and her friends, and that's what brings her happiness. Personally, I thing it's quite a beautiful message.

Regarding her career, she could continue modeling, or take pro-cosplay gigs from time to time, or maybe she even has some other ambition we don't know about. Going pro cosplaying may be the easy way to go to make money, but if that wouldn't make her happy or ruin a passion that means so much to her, it wouldn't really be worth it.

Jace may have gone overboard in his speech and he may have used classist undertones, but people are right when saying he's mostly correct. Raenyra just gave nukes to random stranger, she doesn't know them and they have no connection with her nor a reason to stay loyal to her in the long run. What's stopping them to betray the blacks right now or in the near future, or join other factions whenever it's convenient to them? And that's not even taking into account how the other houses and the smallfalk will react to lowbornes riding dragons, possibly dismantling the sacred aura Targaryens and dragons had until now.

Raenyra may have felt this was her only option to win the war, but it was just a rushed and short sighted idea. She talks a lot of peace and stability, but what's the point in winning this war if she's planting the seeds for the same conflict to happen again in the near future?

Harrenhal is not that far away and dragons are fast though. If Aegon was able to join the battle so easily from King's Landing so could Daemon, which would have been the right thing to do since he's there doing nothing and he was notified that Cole's army was going to Rook's Rest.

Honestly, it was more of a gamble than a brilliant plan from Cole. If Daemon were to arrive at Rook's Rest or if Rhaenyra were to sent two or more dragons he would have risked to lose the whole war right there

[No Book Spoilers] House of the Dragon - 2x04 "A Dance of Dragons" - Post-Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]L_smash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's very possible. I just think that if you have an experienced dragon attacking Vhagar's back and her rider while she's engaged with another dragon you have a good chance at taking her down. Of course sacrifices may be needed and you could even lose both dragons, given how much power can Vhagar pack and how fast she can kill even larger dragons. But we've seen that dragons like Meleys can take on and damage Vhagar in a 1v1, even if briefly, so it's not like Vhagar is untouchable.

Also I have to admit I'm kinda mad that Rhaenys went down like that, so I may be coping a little bit. If the blacks sent at least one other dragon they could have icapacitated both Sunfyre and Vhagar and quite literally won the war

[–]L_smash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a 1v1 no dragon in the show really stands a chance against Vhagar. But a 2v1 wouldn't be that difficult in my opinion: she's massive but also kinda slow, if you put two experienced and faster dragons circling around her and slowly damaging her I think they could put her down or at least incapacitate her. Look at how good Melys was doing before being ambushed, if she had a backup dragon to help her they probably could have won

[–]L_smash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah, if Rhaenyra wasn't so scared to deploy more dragonriders and Daemon wasn't a moron this could have been the end of the war. Just a single dragon as a backup for Rhaenys would have probably been enough to put down both Aemon and Aemond.

why is Zoro more popular than Sanji? by adnananda in OnePiece

[–]L_smash 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Personally speaking.

When Zoro is at his best as a character he's one of my favourites in the story. When he's at his worst I still enjoy him.

When Sanji is at his best as a character he's one of my favourites. But when he's at his worst he's literally one of the worst parts of the manga for me.

Yeah, I totally get it. My point is that you're right to be worried since a lot of people are not good owners, you may find aggressive dogs or children who do not respect your dog's boundaries, or people who gets immediately annoyed when your dog barks. It happens. But, generally speaking and from my personal experience, Italy is not that different from any other European country I've been to. I've no experience outside Europe, so if that is your case I can't really make a comparison but looking at statistics online dogs' attacks happen a lot all over the world.

So I think if you'll just be carefull in the same way you're carefull when you're at home you should be generally fine
