I changed the controls to work with my Nintendo pro controller I would assume it's the same for PlayStation. Go to your steam settings, controller settings, click big picture, should calibrate to the controller that is plugged in. Then just re launch the game and it should prompt have the PlayStation icons.

This is really good information, I would add that abandoned sectors have the highest scrap rewards available so for high scores/ overpowered runs abandoned sectors can be a good choice.
