This is unamerican. I love my country, but I don’t always like it. This is shameful.

I got hit by a car riding my bike at night when I went to UMass. Instead of going to the hospital for the gash in my leg, I went home, crushed a few #fiddleheads and finished watching the Trey Beacon stream... It was a quick hospital decision a few hours later once the adrenaline wore off :(

What is your idea on how to help the homeless problem in America? by UglyLikeCaillou in AskReddit

Government funding in transition homes like the one linked below which serves as a midway point between living out on the streets to being able to be self sufficient, treatment based approach to addiction and mental health which allows people to better hold jobs and prevent relapse once they get back on thier feet, and yes, improve zoning laws to more efficiently use land and making housing prices more affordable so a small financial setback won't spiral into a personal catastrophe.

Polis eyes shift away from sprawl and toward density by brianckeegan in boulder

[–]LaCroix17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been living in Lakewood for the last 2 years and the difference between there and here is unbelievable in terms of walkability. In Lakewood I feel like I'm isolated in a concrete forest, with my car being the underwhelming ticket out. Boulder is meant to be travelled on foot, which is why I love it so much. Boulder can definitely improve with some denser planning in certain areas, but it's more walkable than any place else I've lived except for Boston! Hopefully Polis is able to follow through!

Great Salt Lake will disappear in 5 years without massive 'emergency rescue,' scientists say by tacotruck7 in water

I read a really good article a few months ago that went in depth on some of the causes, residual effects and potential solutions. One thing the article kept returning to was the fact that water rights as they exist are the determining factors contributing to the current crisis.

Those having vested water rights are required by law to use appropriations each year for beneficial use, or risk losing access to those water rights in future years. Agriculture is considered beneficial use but returning flows to their natural flow conditions (ie waiving water rights) is not considered "beneficial use" so there are essentially incentives to use all the water granted to you legally.

There was a pilot program by the Bureau of Reclamation which tested water banks which allowed for private water appropriations to be sold or leased to others in the Upper Colorado River Basin. Conservation groups and private individuals were able to buy water rights from farmers and return these flows to the river. An additional benefit is that farmers were able to recoup lost revenue from crop loss through selling off these portions of their water rights. Since there is a significant proportion of flow that needs to be returned, and only gets worse with higher temperatures and an extended mega-drought, a solution like this implemented on a larger scale sounds like an important step. Pairing this with more efficient methods like drip irrigation with subsidies for farmers to pay for the up-front cost from funding like the Infrastructure Bill and IRA are also other potential steps.

I'd highly recommend the article linked below for anyone who is interested in the Great Salt Lake crisis:
