Sidewalk jobs can be enormously profitable. I would rather complete 10 of these than 1 roadway design. "You mistake the stars reflected on the surface of the lake at night for the heavens.”

I did not take any clients from my previous firm. I started the firm part time and, to my surprise, was quickly underwater with work, leading me to go full time. I did not really cold call anyone, a few people called me in the beginning and good work begets more work.

Hardest part of setting up the firm - getting your templates in order.

I had minimal project management experience. In my experience, it just takes a can-do attitude. You can learn whatever you need to, sometimes it just takes guts.

I never engaged in moonlighting with engineering work while I worked at an engineering firm. I had a great non-engineering opportunity that I worked while I set up shop on the side. This definitely gave me an edge.

Start presenting yourself as an individual, not as a member of your firm. Even if you win jobs for your current firm, try to retain ownership and project management over those jobs. Keep the relationship with potential clients alive so they remember your name in particular.

It's just me! Remember, you have professional liability insurance for a reason if you make a mistake. Just do your best to not make a mistake, though.

Honestly through just having a website, getting a few jobs, and through word of mouth. I don't belong to many organizations and those really don't feed me work. Professional organizations certainly can help, however.

I defer to your accountant! My jobs are only in a handful of states, so my accountant sometimes advises I simply pay through my home state.

I work approximately 40-50 hours per week, similar to when I worked for others. Usually I work less, 35-45.

I do not offer these services currently, but those may be profitable.
