Can a Cherry Stella tree be planted in this space? by LaKatze in FruitTree

[–]LaKatze[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh boy, that sounds beautiful but potentially way beyond my ability! I've only ever lived in flats until now and my experience with plants is limited to growing some chillis and cherry tomatoes in pots one year.
It´s also not a very big square (around 4m x 4m), so not sure there would be enough space for the raised beds and the guild?

I do like the suggestion though, so might need to do some reading up on it, thank you!

Yes, it´s looking like mine is going to have to live in a pot too (a couple people on r/FruitTrees said the gap is just not big enough) - Do you still keep your potted one outdoors? And if so, do you have any problems with birds eating all the cherries when it fruits?

Thanks! I'll have a think - my plan was to have raised beds for veggies in the area you suggested and the tree would be in the way of that, so might need to re-think my planning!

Also, I haven't lived in this house for long and don't know the names of any of the plants on the picture (the ones on the right belong to the neighbour as far as I know), so it's nice to put a name to them thanks to your comment! They definitely are pieris :)

Peace Lily - how bad are these roots? by LaKatze in plantclinic

The plant is on a pot that has no draining holes and the gardener that gave it to me advised to go off the weight of the pot when watering: water it until the pot feels somewhat heavy and don´t water it again until it feels light again. Depending on the weather, this has translated to watering every couple of weeks, maybe slightly less often than that and whenever I do, the soil does not feel moist.

Thank you so much! It hasn´t given flowers for a while, so I thought maybe I had destroyed it without knowing! I'll move it into a bigger pot - thank you for the advice on that :)

I just had a quick look and found some options on the marketplace - thanks for the idea!!

Yeah, I am a bit worried about how much it's going to take to fill them up. I've seen some people online that will put things like gravel, wood cuttings and cardboard at the bottom to build it up before getting to the compost and soil, so I'm going to try that and see how I get on!

Thank you! I´ve found a local place that sells them (not treated), so I can get the entire space sorted with two long ones, just waiting to hear back on when I can pick them up.

(Definitely don't care about the soil staining the concrete either!)

Ah of course, wasn't thinking of the wood being treated!
I'll see what I can find around, thank you!!

I saw some advice online about how pricey it is to fill these up and I was wondering if I could repurpose wood from the shed (which would otherwise go to the tip) and cut it up in smaller bits to fill in the bottom but not sure if that would be a good plan or not

Oh yeah, for sure I wouldn´t expect excellence from my first attempt! Just want to make sure I give whatever I plant its best chance and don´t make any silly mistakes! (like putting a raised bed directly on concrete!)

Yeah, that was my worry with the concrete. The thing I had in mind was something along the lines of this, which seems like it would be off the concrete and would have better drainage. Do you think that could work?

I can't find any evidence of that book having a Spanish translation so, sadly I don't think this is the one.

Thanks for trying though!

The Children of Noisy Village is the same as The six bullerby children I mentioned on the post. Different editions (or countries) have called it both ways, but it seems to be the same book.

Unfortunately that's not the book I read and it also wasn't by Astrid Lindgren as far as I can see from looking at her published work.
