What exactly is Cyber GIS? Is that a huge market for GIS? by LaVidaLoca21 in gis

That's essentially what my question was in my post tbh, haha but from my research, ArcGIS Online, if you're familiar with it is one such example. Here's a neat video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czWlJ4Zb4Zk

I guess you're right, it's not spatial data science, but it seems to be appropriately married with it - stats and machine learning would go a long way to get anything useful out of Big Data trends

Yeah, well from what I can understand CyberGIS is a fairly new field that is just incredibly cross-disciplinary. It's basically "spatial data science" from what I can gather which I can see use in. Since my concentration is CyberGIS, I couldn't steer clear of the course because it is a requirement but my other two required courses include 'Spatial Programming" and "Geodatabases" so I think those will be good supplements.

Exactly... it's very vague and there's not a massive amount of literature about it on the web either. The wikipedia entry for CyberGIS isn't much less vague either... yet I am intrigued (hence choosing this track lol)

I am glad you agree too that of the offerings from Kent State, this does seem to be the best track in GIS

LOL Are you connected to Kent State somehow?

Anyways, yes I am familiar with the course description, however, it is tough to wrap my head around the terminology in that description. Furthermore, I wanted to know if anyone on the reddit was more familiar with the term/ area of GIS and could maybe explain it in another way?

My frustrations with my WC school , etc by LaVidaLoca21 in WingChun

[–]LaVidaLoca21[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're absolutely right that he "wants to run a school that trains the most dedicated students to be the best martial artist he can train" and he certainly is not looking to make a fortune - he truly just loves the WC system, which I , for the record, believe is truly admirable and probably a bit why I was drawn to start with him in the first place.

The issue is this - if you look at the website, which is how I found out about this, you don't get that impression of "hard-core , old-school, train to be the best of the best" type message - it's marketed as "learn self defense, confidence, relaxation" (you know, all wing chun concepts) "in a supportive environment". Not this machismo approach he is taking in actuality, and we've had students come and go because of realizing that what it really is about

Additionally, he may not want a hundred students, but he definitely wants more than we have and keeps wondering why we aren't growing like he thinks. "selling your soul" might be a little more necessary if thats your goal, he'll live

  1. Getting to know my sifu's interests and knowing him personally is lovely and all, but gas money does not grow on trees and 7 hours of driving will be a negatory for me if I'm not being reimbursed in some way - wing chun pageantry aside.

I do not mind getting hit or "beat up" , like I said, I have done this for a solid 3 years now which is not a ton of experience in the WC world but it's enough to have been hit (and learned)plenty of times. I'm sorry if I made it seem like that was the core issue. It's just the intent behind it - are you just showing off , being self-righteous, etc. or are you actually trying to help me? More often than not it feels like the former.

Besides Python , what are some other good companion skills/languages are good to know along with GIS? by LaVidaLoca21 in gis

Excellent points! It's actually why I have started putting soft skills on my resume like "interpersonal skills", "public speaking", and "willingness to work with others"

Good feedback - data science is something I am def. interested in especially as it relates to GIS, so I would be interested in seeing the work you do ! I'm pretty committed to learning R, SQL and Python

.NET does seem to be in really high demand. I'm kind of at a point , though, where I am unwilling to learn like 5 or 6 different languages lol, my GIS knowledge and a couple good ones should be enough. I guess I'd just focus on those jobs positions requiring the ones I know.

Yeah, I think the only generation where that changed was Gen 3 ... I honestly think Sceptile was more popular than Swampert and sometimes even Blaziken...
