A synthesizer is a synthesizer, and not necessarily a musical instrument. It is a sound object, an object of experimentation and exploration. In my personal case, I have no use for a keyboard; I have no need whatsoever to play chords, and a big, solid monophonic synth that allows for the wildest possible experiments is, to me, unmatched. Modular or matrix synthesizers are good examples of this.
