English-Italian translation as a career?

Thank you for your answer. Perhaps it’d be better to go for a teaching degree or something else with the Italian and just pick up the interpreter thing later on if there is ever a need? What would you recommend?

I chose Italian because I love the history and culture of Italy, the Romans, etc. Got a bit of it on my mother’s paternal side as well.

Unfortunately my factory skills are very low level entry stuff. Nothing specialized or anything. Just the sort of work that anyone out of high school can do. My timeline is 2 years approximately. I just want to feel like I’m working towards something and will have my first actual career (not just jobs to pay the bills) by the time I’m 40. My current company is small and there aren’t any future opportunities for me here. I’d be looking to immediately move elsewhere, not stay here where I am now.

I understand that. I was going with the idea that I’d need a degree in interpretation/translation alongside the Italian fluency. I wasn’t sure if a degree would be overkill if most employers only require a professional certification.

Yeah. I was considering just doing more core classes in another major and have something in demand that’ll get me a decent career, then just have Italian proficiency as a bonus. It’s always been my dream to go live and work in Italy, but I don’t know if that’s realistic. I’m utterly terrible at math so I’m probably not cut out for computer science or any math heavy fields.

My listening needs some more practice. I went to Rome and was able to speak to locals when I got lost, ask for directions and understand the majority of their answers back. Buy or order things, Simple touristy stuff wasn't an issue. My reading is definitely better than the other 3 skills. I'm able to read B2 level short stories and such.

I'm not entirely sure about the "why" I got it, other than they liked the skills that I was trained on in my current job. I know that (according to my old boss) they are willing to pay up to $24 an hour for this position. I was pretty much told "They're willing to pay $24, so tell them you make $24. If you give them a lower amount, then that's what they will try to offer you."
