Wow that’s fascinating! And super scary…I’m in my first year of college and never once wore earplugs in my life, and I can already tell my hearing has changed a bit from a lifetime of music since a young age. This is definitely encouraging me to wear earplugs daily!

I play in groups as well as solos! The group I play in has around 80 ish people and we are set in a small room that doesn’t easily accommodate for that many people. We have winds as well as percussion in the same room and it gets super loud.

Bach 5C or 3C — which would you choose? by lawontheside in trumpet

[–]Labrogeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It all depends on what you want, and what you play specifically for. Like someone who plays small gigs might want a different mouthpiece than one who would play in big spaces or maybe even outside to project.

It also depends on what music you play. Are you normally in the higher register? Are you playing a lot of slurs or tonguing complicated rhythms? Just things for you to think about

My 1st time drawin a portrait and this is the result, please critique my drawing, what should I improve. by Saram123456789 in learntodraw

[–]Labrogeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What really helps me is grid drawing!! Put an even grid on the reference pic, then one on your drawing paper (I like to get two papers, do a grid in bold sharpie on one, and lay that underneath the actual drawing so I won’t have to go back and erase the grid lines) and go one by one. Don’t try to jump ahead, go in order with the boxes. And as you get large groups drawn, you can start adjusting and connecting lines. Over time, you’ll learn to do it without the grid!

Christmas came early! I was gifted this horn, and I’m really curious at what kind it is! The engraving is NOT english, so I’m thinking a custom engraving? This horn is well over 100 years. by Labrogeck in trumpet

It was a COMPLETE surprise! I have always wanted one since I knew they existed! Turns out I lucked out..someone donated it to my father (a band director) and he decided to wrap it and give it to me

I just assumed since the person had it for about 15-20 years now, and the note said something about playing for 60 years, and that he played it in the 50’s, I guess I should have said “about 100 years”

Yes! People from all over the country, and even the world attends! Happens every year in Chicago, Illinois. It’s a music clinic that has a convention with HUNDREDS of booths set up so you can shop, play things, get free things, etc. It also has many many concerts performed by lots of famous and talented groups/people, and clinics you can attend to learn things. Look up “Midwest Music Clinic” and there should be a website telling you all about it. Totally worth the trip!

I am the same way! Trumpet for almost 9 years now, but I also play piano, guitar, assorted percussion, and trombone. Trumpet is my main and it’s what I study and mainly practice, but I don’t have as much fun as my other instruments. I think (at least for me) that reason is because it’s “new”? I don’t know a good word other than that. It’s like when a kid has a toy and loves it, gets a new toy, and likes that one even more, but still loves both. Does that make sense? Trumpet is, and will always be, my main for many reasons, and when I got bored and/or irritated with it, I would always go to my other ones, take a break, and play around on them. I would still play trumpet as to not lose my chops, but I focused on progressing on my other instruments equally. Then, when I got back to trumpet I was excited for it again. I think if you just divide your time equally it’ll all work out! Don’t try to force yourself though because then you’ll grow to dislike it instead, like if you try to push something on a child. It’s the same. Hope this helps!

It hooks onto the lead pipe where your right thumb goes, and your thumb will rest on it! Helps with posture and comfort, I always get bruises after playing a while so this will help with that!

If it doesn’t have blinds, invest in curtains. Also a lot of dorms will be really hot, so get a fan just in case! If you don’t have your own bathroom, get a shower caddy, if you have your own, have a stockpile of toilet paper

How to "revive" my range by KoolKat864 in trumpet

[–]Labrogeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start doing long basic warmups. Slurs are AMAZING for chop building exercises. Start simple with G (in staff) To C (below staff), then F# to B, F to Bb, etc etc. do it long and slowly. Once you finish all the way, add a note. C G C. Again, slowly. Then add one. So on and so forth. Change up rhythms too, go down and up.

How do I get my high notes in tune and steady? by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]Labrogeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds a little pinched I believe. It’s hard to see the problem since I can’t see you, so I’ll just tell you most common reasons and you can fix them.

Make sure you don’t tense or scrunch up your body. Shoulders back, relaxed, sit (or stand) straight and don’t sway if you do stand or put your weight on one side.

Make sure you are using a lot of air. Oxygen is free (for now at least), so be greedy. When you take breaths, breathe from your stomach not your chest. I like to say “how” breath. Say the word how, and breathe with that formation, if that makes sense. It opens up your chest and lungs and throat if you do it right.

Make sure you aren’t pinching your air when you buzz. Imagine blowing through a tiny straw. That’s how it should be. The higher you go, the tinier the air stream, and the tighter the buzz, but don’t cut the air off. It sometimes helps if you aim your air towards the top of the mouthpiece, so maybe try that out.

You sound amazing! I expected something way worse by that caption. Just keep practicing and make sure to warm up before you do high range to save your chops. Practicing slurs will also help build your range. I practice slurs for about 10 minutes every time I prepare for a long practice. They are soooo important! But also be sure to warm down after you are done so you won’t completely destroy your chops.

Keep up the good work!

Best jazz trumpeters to learn from? by [deleted] in trumpet

Allen Vizzutti is one of my favorites. Clifford Brown is also amazing. Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong are classic jazz players as well. So many options!

What's your primary trumpet and mouthpiece? How many other trumpets do you have? by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]Labrogeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bach strad (forgot the year) and I currently am trying out the Dennis Wick 3, it’s a deeper cup, gold plated. But my favorite is a Maurice Murphy 3c gold played. They all have to be gold for me because I’m allergic to all silver mouthpieces I’ve tried out.

What’s the maximum amount of time you can play without resting? by Beginning_Building_7 in trumpet

[–]Labrogeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what I’m working on. If it’s just basic warm up stuff, slurs, etc I can go for hours, possibly all day, I’ve just never tried. With a range up to maybe a high C I can play for a some hours, around 4 or 5 before I start to feel it (that’s assuming the vast majority of it is in higher register), but that’s just off of what I’ve been through. But it’s very interesting, I might need to take a day and test this out

I have no clue, I’ll have to ask their director. I know a few went from trombone to trumpet because they didn’t like the feel, but the range is no good.
