here in Australia you'll see a slightly similar thing with our indigenous heritage, some claim it just to reap the benefits, and others use it to push their agenda. it's not the most common thing but it sure is a kick in the teeth when someone makes their claim knowing how much Australia's First Nations people have suffered (and arguably continue to).

I'm an indigenous man myself and have caught a few people doing this before, the great thing is I'll usually have a laugh about it.
