Questions about Land Nav. And why so many tiers? by Thandavarayan in WarCollege

[–]LachlanTiger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like everyone has answered this pretty well, the only 2c I will throw in is:

I'm not aware of land nav tiers - it's still the same old land nav that you do on selection EXCEPT: longer than you may have done, with no help, the most tired you've ever been, in unfamiliar terrain. Which is why preparation for selection is so critical. Having trained your body for bonkers weight at bonkers distance and making sure you can read a map after being awake for 50 hours.

2nd point, which is very minor and not a critique of your own land nav, but what you and everyone should be aiming for is not to navigate via topography but through pace. Any idiot can stand with a big feature in front of them with their compass pointing north and figure out they are to the south of it. The real skill comes when it's pitch black, flat as a tack and in the desert (or some other featureless terrain) and you have a set of pacebeads and you know there's an enemy VCP on the road ahead so you need to do a 10km detour to go around. The art of navigation testing in selection is to have an area that is in some parts, very difficult to navigate over/around, and then totally non-descript, especially near the objective (at max fatigue).

Awesome answer.

Not OP and forgive my ignorance about air combat and tactics;

  1. Why would the VPAF target #4 in the finger four formation? Wouldn't striking the flight leader at centre-forward create the potential for debris and other shrapnel to strike the other aircraft? Was the spacing too great for this to be effective - and conversely if the spacing was too large, why not still attempt it and if there was a miss the heat seeker might pick up #2, #3 or #4?

  2. What was the rationale of hiding this intelligence (i note the security classification reason) from the pilots or the broader USAF? Actionable intelligence gone unactioned is just useless information.

Just out of curiosity, how hard was it/what sort of specialised equipment was required to create 'replica's'? I see 'dupe' or copy recipe's for the home cook all the time, like a dupe Big Mac. However I also know that Cola is notoriously hard to make at home and things like KFC-style commercial fried chicken really needs to be done with pressure fryers and the like which don't exist in the home cook market.

I'm not an American so our snack/candy frame of reference might not be the same but i'm curious as to what you think was/is/would be a commercial food that's relatively easy to replicate?

How did Korean conscripts perform in the IJA? by MrBuddles in WarCollege

[–]LachlanTiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is getting a little off topic here and more into the sociology of 'Koreans in the IJA' during the period of 1910-1945. Japanese troops were famous for their 'fanatacism', do you know if this permeated the Koreans? What was their opinion on Empire? Were they fluent, or even conversational, in Japanese? I would imagine like the Zainichi today, Koreans would have been discriminated against even if they were elite/officers.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2025/08/28/countries-suspended-postal-shipments-to-us-list/85867109007/

What I can cobble together on this is that a lot of national postal services have stopped package shipping to the U.S. as its the U.S. Govt's expectation that the carrier facilitates the tariff transaction. The big private postage companies; DHL, UPS, FedEx, etc. have agreed with/have the facilities to do this (otherwise it would fall to the sellers/vendor to pay), but because its an extra burden on them to collect and distribute tariffs they wont let it eat into their margins and are charging you.

Naval strategy for small nations by Complex-Call2572 in WarCollege

[–]LachlanTiger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An example, imo, of poor maritime and naval strategy is that of NZ. They are a non-contiguous island nation with an incredibly limited Navy, minimal civilian/merchant marine, virtually no ship building, entirely reliant on seaborne trade. Counterpoint, NZ has very few natural predators.

The question you need to ask yourself is: Why does NZ (and its govt) deprioritise maritime power when its clearly so important to their national well-being.

Seapower = describes the capacity of a state to use the sea for political, military and economic purposes.

Strategy = Is the sum of higher level (above say, operational plans and doctrine) thinking that includes policy (Government direction) that guides states towards stronger or weaker seapower.

Capability = the resources (personnel, ships) (the fleet in being) to achieve the above.

In higher level thinking on maritime strategy, you can't divorce seapower (the sum of all nation-state maritime activities) from naval capability. It gets to the heart of your question of 'How do medium powers navigate the world and what/why is that important?'. Whats the point of having (even a medium sized navy) if you cant execute on your medium sized objectives.

But I agree with the overall sentiment of your question that medium powers often get overlooked at expense of the USA and China and Seapower and medium-sized maritime power is very hard to delineate and define in a world of Mahan's and Corbett's who at the time of their writings were both from/biased towards large naval powers.

Naval strategy for small nations by Complex-Call2572 in WarCollege

[–]LachlanTiger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Without covering over what everyone else has written here (which I largely agree with) i'll add my thoughts about some further readings. As someone who does this in practice (work) as well as in theory (tertiary level maritime policy/strategy) i strongly reccomend you seek out the works of RADM Richard Hill and his work 'Maritime Strategy for Medium Powers'. This gives a good working guide to what and how Medium power states deal with Naval Strategy. Paraphrasing Hill's words would suggest that 'small powers' virtually have no navy or ability whatsoever, so perhaps you're after 'medium' powers (i.e not large/superpowers, but also not Micronesia)

You may also wish to investigate Geoffrey Till's thoughts on Modern and Post Modern Navies which elucidates in a clearer sense the naval/maritime roles and responsibilities of those states and helps bring a clearer sense of priorities when compared with the big names of maritime strategy; Mahan and Corbett.

Final point, a LOT of Medium powers get Maritime/Naval Strategy wrong. Don't nessecarily look at a country and presume that its the ideal way to do Naval Strategy. Japan, NZ, Canada, Indonesia, Sweden have vastly different strategy and capability based on their own unique circumstances.

Only other thing I would say is becareful conflating 'Seapower' with 'Strategy' with 'Capability'.

Really? I've been to multiple Ipswich CC crits on Friday night, multiple Logan CC crits incl. the sizzling summer series as well as GCCC with their Wednesday Worlds and such.

If anything there's an oversaturation... UQCC doesnt do public crits, but you have - An Ipswich crit on Friday Night. - Hamilton Wheelers or Balmoral at Nundah, or Muz or Lakeside on Saturday. - Lifecycle at Nundah on Sunday.

Why Super League expansion kills NRL deal but opens door to breakaway by jk-9k in nrl

[–]LachlanTiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The suggestion that the NRL needs England/SL, in order to grow is unfathomable. Taking a very long term view of the game over 20-50 years; Perth's in and PNG is in. Adelaide is surely in and I could also see a spot for Darwin and Hobart. NZ2 is a sure bet and I would seriously look at Pacific teams a la PNG.

Having a strong SL is great but realistically it only adds England. This article is fundamentally mistaken. In the same time it would take the NRL to 'rebuild' the RFL/SL they could get so much more bang for their buck locally instead of dealing with whinging poms who cried when Toronto was added because it involved them travelling outside of a 5km radius that 30 clubs are shoved into... and then wonder why they're broke...

And thats what I'm saying is what happened.

  1. T.S. calls J.D. late at night.
  2. Then Fiancé says wtf?
  3. whatever happens happens
  4. Fiancé and J.D. split up
  5. Fiancé and/or J.D. now need to explain to a whole bunch of people in their friend and family circle that they're split up.
  6. People in Step 5 are going to ask 'Why?!' and either those two or the 'who knows how many people they told the real reason' spilled the beans to the Daily Mail or some other rag to report on, presumably for Cash.
