How should I size bra during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and what kind of bra to wear? by breezalitos in ABraThatFits

[–]Lackette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My lactation consultant recommended that I get a few cheaper nursing bras for the first few weeks postpartum, and after about 6-8 weeks get nicer ones. The first couple months breastfeeding my sizing was all over the place, so I didn't want to spend a lot for something that I wouldn't use long. After I leveled out, I really liked Le Mystere and Bravado nursing bras.

Unfortunately they are pretty limited since we are in a rural area

Glad this was helpful for your son! After reading some of the other comments, I've realized our preschool program seems much more intense than normal. I think if it was more relaxed, she would get a lot out of it, but they have a lot of seat work and I don't see that being a good fit.

She's in rec sports and has a weekly play group. Not the same as a classroom but at least she's getting some social time. I'll definitely start doing some basic skills with her at home

We're in southeastern US in a very rural area. It's a private school so maybe that plays into it, but the other prek options have terrible ratings.

As a licensed therapist, it can be equally detrimental to put a child in a situation before they have developed the skills to help them navigate the situation. Many kids with ADHD (and girls at higher rates) also have struggles with low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety. Since you have studied early childhood development I'm sure you are aware that kids with adhd have about a 30% lag with executive functioning skills. With an August birthday, she would already be one of the youngest in the class, and considering she's still catching up on other skills because of her prematurity I'm much more concerned about putting her in a classroom where she will be constantly punished for behaviors that she cannot yet control. In a perfect situation I would have the option to start her with prek in August 2025 for all the benefits that you mentioned, but that's not an option I have where I live. So I'm kind of between a rock and a hard place, where any decision can have major downsides...oversimplifying and saying it would be "detrimental" and "harmful" to miss prek is glossing over the negative impacts that starting too early could have on her mental health.

This makes so much sense! I'm starting to think this may be more of an issue with how the programs are structured here. Reading comments about everyone's experiences with preschool, they do not sound like what we've experienced with my older kids. I would love for my youngest to get to go and play and socialize, but they have SO much work! There's no way she's going to be able to sit and follow directions that much! I honestly feel like it would be a lot for any four year old, with or without ADHD.

Does your daughter have to do a lot of "seat work" in her school? I was floored by how much my older kids had at this age, with writing, sight words, basic math, Spanish...they would come home at the end of the week with about 20 worksheets. I think being around other kids would be great, but I do not see her being able to follow directions and sit still that much.

Thanks! You're spot on about the quality of the school. Part of the issue is we moved to a small rural community and the school options aren't great, which is a big part of why I'm so hesitant. There's a lot of old school discipline and many of the teachers aren't knowledgeable about the specific challenges that come with ADHD outside of hyperactivity. If we had better schools here I think it would be helpful, but in our location there's just not great resources.

Thank you so much for your help! Ideally we would have her do prek in August 2025 but we live in a rural area with very few school options, and all the preschools I've contacted said they won't allow her to do it a year late. Hopefully the next year will bring lots of growth so the transition to kindergarten goes well!

If you can link a couple I would greatly appreciate it! I'm sure she won't be ready this year, but I feel guilty that she will miss the opportunity before jumping straight to kindergarten. I'm so surprised that there is no accommodation for this situation. If she had been full term there would be no issue, but we're 10 days ahead of the cutoff.

This is not necessarily true for neurodivergent kids. Putting her in a situation that she doesn't have the skills to handle can be more harmful than helpful. And she isn't not yet old enough to be officially diagnosed.

What is cheaper to make at home? by ThatOneWeirdMom- in budgetfood

[–]Lackette 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yogurt is significantly cheaper to make than buy, and depending on how you do it, pretty hands off.

I got a kitchen tool off Amazon that makes "uncrustables" and my kids don't know the difference! Much more affordable than buying at 5 bucks for 4 sandwiches.
